So my sister had lunch here and said how great the bento box was, so we went for dinner...well, the whole experience was aweful. We waited for over 50 minutes for any food to be brought out and we had to ask for it at this point. They didnt understand what we were asking for, service was slow and the food that eventually was served was overpowered by fish and pickled veg, the servings were small and we left unsatisfied and having to go elsewhere to have some food as we were starving. Not impressed at all and would not recommend it to anyone.
Let me start off by saying Im the kind of guy that loves big serves. I love being a carnivore. Take me to an all you can eat & Im in culinary nirvana. My wife on the other hand enjoys small serves, delicate flavours & is always concerned about the nutritional aspects. Because of this my wifes fave cuisine is Japanese. Generally this means we have two diverse paths we want to go down when deciding on a place to eat. Sound like a problem? I found the solution! Enter Takumi. Takumi is a Japanese restaurant at the top end of Bourke St that specialises in Wagyu Beef. (that gets ticks from me & the mrs). Furthermore, during the week they offer all you can eat for $49. Big tick from this camper! A Wagyu beef specialist Japanese restaurant that is all you can eat? You heard me right! When we arrived the place was empty. Not usually a good sign. What were we getting ourselves in for? But having said that we got there at 6PM (have to eat early because of Oscar, our almost 3 YO). After some masterful negotiations I managed to get agreement on the all you can eat option (as long as we ordered some healthier entrees & the seafood (all you can eat) add-on for $15). For entrees we got edamame, salmon carpaccio & scallop sashimi. What a start! My taste buds were buzzing, eagerly anticipating the main event. I should have clicked when I saw the circular metal thing at the centre of our table but it was only after the waitress came around with a bowl full of charcoal that I clicked. Not only was it all you can eat but it was cook it yourself. I love this concept. Korean BBQ usually has this approach. You get to BBQ fine cuts of meat, too your liking, in your own time, right there at the table. I think drool instantly started emanating from my lips. My drool was not in vain my friends! The beef was divine and yes it was plentiful. The seafood was a great addition (big ups to you mrs). Food aside, I say there is a holy trinity to a good dining experience. Food (check), dcor & service. Takumi shined on all three. Takumi resides in the old Water & Grass restaurant. The decor is warm, inviting, modern & absolutely Japanese. It looks & feels like a high-end restaurant, without the high-end price tag. Oscar can be a bit of a handful when eating out. Many times were happy if the staff are simply accepting of his cries, food throwing & the other standard 3 YO repertoire. The staff at Takumi were extremely accommodating, to the point that we basically had childcare provided as part of our dining experience. Oscar spent a lot of the night walking around with the staff, looking at things, touching many other things, and the whole time the staff were smiling. Yes, Takumi, you are a clear winner in my eyes. This was my first but wont be my last visit.
I've been a Concierge in Melbourne for nearly 10 years and every so often you discover a restaurant that not only prvides good service and excellent quality produce but has an ambience and comfort that is unique to other restaurants. I stumbled upon this restaurant when looking for something to eat prior to a show at the Palais Theatre. As i looked through the door i was enticed by a warm smile and welcoming gesture that is a custom in Japan. After help with selecting from the menu, a little charcoal grill was place into the centre position of my table. The self involement of cooking on your own authentic charcoal grill (which i discovered was imported straight from Japan) means that dining out became that much more exciting especially when fresh seafood and quality Wagyu are served for you to begin cooking. I was intantly taken back to my Journey through Japan at the end of 2008 to find that I could enjoy the culinary delights right here in Melbourne. The selection of Wagyu beef was impressive and as equaly impressive as it entered my mouth (both raw & slightly cooked)and the Soba noodle salad was as good as it gets. If your keen like i am try the ox tounge and the boiled scollops with Wasabi (Goes fantastic with serving of warm Sake) This reataurant is perfect for a romantic evening aided by the drop down curtain for seclusion or a group dinner that keeps everyone talking and anticipating the next dish. Well done to the staff at Takumi Restaurant.
My family of six, as young as 9 and as old as 65 just came home after having the best dinner experience at Takumi Japanese Restaurant. We all loved the charcoal grilled beef and the kids loved the concept of cooking on our own table. The scallops were sensationally fresh that we could not resist eating them direct from the plate. The services were just excellent, we tried everything the friendly staff recommended to cather for all ages on our table, and we had no complaint from anyone. Thanks Takumi, I have never seen my kids eating so much and enjoyed every bits of it! We will definitely return for more and be some of your most regular customer. I / we recommend this restaurant to any one who loves fresh salads, beef and seafood. You have total control over how well you want your food cooked.
Great ambience, best wagyu beef selection. The smokeless grille serves as the centre point for gathering makes it an ideal night out with friends. My personal favourites are the signature dishes especially the Takumi special and Salmon carpaccio, we had the set menu which offered a perfect range and the dishes just kept coming, the grilled wagyu was just mouth watering....we definitely will be back.
