The service here seems to have gone from bad to worse. The waiters and waitresses try really hard not to make eye contact. Dishes came with long awkward breaks in between and they don't honour bookings.

We have a gathering of 15+ at the restaurant. We made a reservation and tried to place our order for the dishes we would have on the day we booked. But was told to come and order on the day. That should have warned us of the mentality of this so called restaurant.
It is just a glorified fast food outlet with reasoanable quality food but have not concept of services.
On the day of our gathering, some of us arrived early to order the dishes. But we were left at our tables and no one came to take our order. We asked a passing staff re order and was given a very curt "Wait!" and that was that. Finally we went to the other staff who seemed to be the manager and told her that we would like to order and have been waiting for quite a while and were ignored.
Only then, someone came to take our order. We asked if the dishes could be served in a certain order and was assured that it would be OK.
But the outcome was a mess. The dishes came in the way they wish to serve.
There was no service to speak of. There were attitude aplenty. We spent about $400 and what we have in return were rudeness!
That was the last time we would go to that so called restuarant ever again!

Come to eat at least half an hour before the respective meal time. For example if you are coming here for dinner- head here at 5:30pm to get a table. The food is really tasty- with more than just dumplings on the menu. The menu is categorised page by page by food types, e.g. soups, vegetables, chicken etc.
Food prices range from around $12 for soup to $20 for a main. Personal favourite dishes include the Pork and Bamboo Soup, the fried chicken pieces in bamboo, and the Pork and prawns in bamboo. (hmmm just realised the Bamboo trend...)
The service is pretty bad- with the food taking a while to arrive- also don't ask for iced water, because they won't bring you glasses, they will ask you to use your tea cups instead, if you already have tea in them they will bring you 4 glasses- even though there are 6 of you...
...at least the food is tasty.

Good, hearty Shanghainese food but the service here needs improvement. You will most likely find people waiting out the front of the restaurant, especially in the evening. We have made reservations for dinner but have turned up, only to find that we still had to take a ticket and wait for half an hour to get a table. Your best bet is to get there at around 12 for lunch before the crowds start gathering.

I recommend ordering a mixture of dumpling, rice and noodle dishes and a soup to wash it all down. While the Xiao Long Bao (soupy dumplings) are good, the ones you get at Din Tai Fung and New Shanghai are a tad better (the dumpling pastry is thinner). Try the preserved vegetables fried rice and the pork and dumpling soup.

The waiters (and waitresses) seem really scattered. For example, they might set a table for 3 with 2 sets of plates/bowls. When you ask for the third, they might bring back everything but chopsticks. If you flag them down for some extra tea/rice, they might come back with a teacup. For a busy chinese restaurant, I suppose it is not unexpected.

Sorry I meant the pork and bamboo soup, not the pork and dumpling soup.

Shanghai food restaurants are dominant in Ashfield, Sydney inner west. However, this restaurant in Eastwood is more popular as the queue there is really longer. Sometimes you had better get a ticket for the queue and then shopping around for half to one hour in weekend. Food are authentic shanghai food, including more than 10 different dumplings with different cooking style and ingredient. My favorite is pork soup with asparagus. The best time coming here is lunch time. If at night, be prepared to wait longer.

The line to enter this casual dining restaurant is long- and in a suburb saturated with asian eateries, a line is a really good indication that the food is exceptional quality and value... and it definately is! The menu has a range of shanghainese delicacies from preserved vegetables and pork with corn buns, to fried garlic chicken and the famous 'xiao long bao' dumplings. Served piping hot- the freshly steamed trays of dumplings are especially welcomed on a cold day- just be careful that you don't get dumpling soup splatter on your clothes from an over zealous friend. Overall a good, wuick, down to earth place to eat with friends.
