Reviews of The Argyle
The first part of any answer is the question! So, before I write this review, let me ask you a question.
Do you enjoy a nice bar with great service in a beautiful area that's relatively well priced and hold's cool events where you'll have excuse to dress nicely and have a genuinely good time most of the time?
If the answer is yes, The Argyle is for you! YAY good times.
Look, The Argyle is down in The Rocks. For those of you who don't know what that is, it's the area in Sydney's Famous Harbour where all the pubs, bars, restaurants, markets, art galleries, souvenir shops, arts and crafts retailers etc. reside.
Ok, let me make it easier for you non-Sydney siders. Look up 'Sydney Harbour'. See that bridge that looks like a slice of a metal lemon and that weird gigantic white Dragon Ball Z hairstyle on the water? Ok, well, 'The Rocks' as a labyrinth of old, historical lime stone buildings that line one entire side of that harbour.
It's pretty nice.
Now, when you make your way through The Rocks, you will eventually come to a big archway with a red carpet and some cute lights. Enter through here (if you're 18+ or can get passed a bouncer in a giant archway) and you will be in The Argyle's beautiful beer garden. Yes, the giant lime stone archway in the side of a building leads you into an actual courtyard, like the ones you see in movies about pirates where they hung them. In fact, the history of the rocks is a lot of those buildings used to hold prisoners in the 1800's and they probably did hang people in some of those areas, it's a pretty big heritage spot.
OH! Also! this beautiful stone courtyard also has a very long bar, lots of tables and cute Christmas lights and stuff.
Moving on, passed this courtyard is the inner workings of The Argyle - a beautifully organised room of glass, wood and steel spotted in dim, romantic lighting and comfortable seating.
It looks like every club or bar in Gossip Girl except with more bars and no Blake Lively (i know, disappointing).
There is also an upstairs area where the DJ booth is! The DJ booth literally hangs in the middle of the entire complex so you can't get to him/her and annoy them with requests like "DO YOU HAVE ANY STEVE AOKI, BRO!?"
There are also MORE bars up there. (nice work Argyle).
Now, I havent had much interaction passed "Coopers Pale Ale/Hendrick's Soda and Cucumber/Vodka and Ethanol please." but they always have a smile, they're always working really hard and they seem friendly enough.
They're also always really well dressed, so... you don't have to dress like you're famous, but... yeah the staff here will make you look like literal rubbish, they're pretty fancy.
ANYWAY! This place is really cool and I saw Grandmaster Flash play here. They have a bunch of randomly cool gigs here and there.
The Argyle - Do It.
Rude staff was a turn off. We'll never go there again for that reason alone. The receptionists indifferent.
6 of us (three couples) when down for a few drinks. One of the staff was not let in due to having had one too many - the rest of us were fine and told we could go through. When my sister tried to explain they were part of our group. The "gate keeper" then banned her from coming in as well. My boyfriend, questioning their decision was then told they were not allowed in either!!!??!? Next thing you know, we're all guilty by association and disallowed from entering due to questioning criteria and standards.--6 well-dressed, educated professionals.
Such a shame that an otherwise great establishment. Never again!
Nice design set in the colonial Argyle Street of The Rocks - I do love the cobble stone walkways, however it gets extremely crowded mainly with pretentious suits on firday and saturday nights. Great for after work drinks but pricey for food and drinks but normal for the location.
