When the weather gets as stupid as it has been these past holiday days in Melbourne, the test of a good bar is whether or not it feels like an oasis in the midst of the melting bitumen and steaming radiators. Many places buckle under the pressure, stuffed to the gills with patrons, buffeted by one pitifully spluttering air-conditioner. Others provide blessed respite in the cooling shadow of excellent drinks and breezy, high ceilings. Walking up and down Victoria Street with the afternoon mercury pushing 40, The Aviary is one such saviour.
