Best policy To be honest. The Charles – rustic old watering hole that it is – has never been on my list for a fine-dining experience, or even a decent cheap eat.
On wandering through the deserted front bar on my way to Thursday night’s Comedy Lounge, I didn’t even consider the notion of a pub meal. Despite never having been there, I had decided the culinary fare on offer wasn’t for me. But as I walked past the ticket booth, a huge room jammed with people opened up before me, and the smells coming from the generous food portions before them changed my mind in an instant. Surprise discovery My nosh buddy and I ordered two meals to share. Soon, a scotch fillet, cooked medium rare to perfection, and served with dark mushroom sauce, chips and a crunchy, fresh salad arrived, along with a steaming prawn risotto. The presentation and the quality of the food was more gastro pub than tired old local, and the flavours were fantastic.
