Partly set in the garden of a sandstone, heritage cottage, The Commons, briefly known as The Pond, in Darlinghurst could be described as an oasis and certainly hopes to be one.
A bar and restaurant, they serve European food and the menu changes weekly depending on availability of produce. So you're always guaranteed the freshest ingredients.

A wonderful place to have a post work drink. The homely, cottage design makes for a cosy feel. The serve great cocktails and each table is decorated with a jar of wild flowers.

I went here with 3 friends last week and was really impressed. The decor has a European feel to it and will be lovely in winter with its open fireplace. The food was really good, a selection of really good classic food and very tasty. We all really enjoyed our choices. The waiter was very helpful explaining each dish to us for each course, he was french and was quite popular with a couple of my friends as his accent made the food sound even more delicious!! Very reasonably priced too....

There's is nothing common about this casual eatery in a beautiful sandstone heritage house in darlinghurst, just a stone's throw from oxford street. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner this is a great place to meet friends for fresh, seasonal, affordable meals. The vibe is cool but casual and unpretentious. I came here for the first time before a gig. We are seated outside on arrival and served immediately. We order wine by the glass as we peruse the day's menu. I order a main-size wagyu carpaccio, and my boyfriend orders the chicken parmigiana. Our meals come out quickly and they are amazing. By the time we have finished eating, the restaurant is filling up with people eating, drinking and conversing in this comfy oasis. We both agree that it would be great to stay around for a few more drinks, but we have to leave to get to our concert on time. We agree to come back soon. Friends have advised us that the breakfasts are fantastic.

I visited The Commons for breakfast with some friends a couple of weeks ago, and was happy from the get go with the interior design and layout of the venue. It's a cosy place and I know it will be great in winter. The kitchen was understaffed on the day we visited, so the food didn't come out for quiet a while. When it did arrive, the eggs were undercooked but the other ingredients were fresh. The staff were cool and very funny. I can see this venue has potential, just a few improvements may be needed with staffing.

We stumbled across The Commons after the restaurant we originally wanted to have dinner at was full. After being told there would be a wait we were led to the bar downstairs where one could spend a night in itself! The bartender was friendly, the space was intimate and felt secluded and comfortable. The staff collected us once a table was available upstairs and although the table was situated next to a flight of stairs and felt rather make-shift, it did the job. The food was superb, all seasonal produce and beautifully cooked and seasoned. I wouldn't normally indulge in a three course meal but it was impossible to resist the three olive entree, followed by a provolone and spinach ravioli and finished with a chocolate fondant made to order.

The waitresses really know their stuff, they were able to explain anything we didn't understand on the menu and catered to those of us who were vegetarian. Service was efficient and personable, and the ambience was intimate but still boisterous. Definitely my new favourite dining option in Darlinghurst.

We ended up here for post-dinner drinks on a Friday night. While we weren't huge fans of The Pond, and it does seem to attract the same sort of crowd, it feels like a better place this time round. Staff are really friendly and accommodating and the layout of the place just makes you want hang out in a cosy nook that much longer. A nice surprise.
