Oliver Markart and Beau Downs, owners of the New Farm situated 'The Continental' cafe/restaurant, often joke that it's the customers that own the establishment not them. In a world where food is becoming exceptionally fussy and portion sizes are shrinking faster than Antarctica, 'The Continental' harks back to a simpler time by serving traditional European comfort food meals.

In walking distance from the Village Twin Cinema, the establishment serves as a great place to eat before or after a movie. Take the family out for a meal, kids are well catered for and dad will be happy about the bill.

Available for functions and fully licensed.

Contintental has been around for over 10 years and has been consistently good in all this time. The food is always very well done and menu has so many great options, its hard to make a choice. It is great for breakfast, lunch and dinner and the service is very good.

My family has been going to Continental Cafe for over 6 years. The food and service are always of a high standard and the prices are very reasonable.

IT'S a New Farm institution, attracting a long line of regulars who have been filling the small main dining area as well as the two adjacent spaces for decades.

The Continental Cafe has had a series of operators over the years, with current owners chef Beau Downs and business partner Oliver Markart at the helm for the past three years.

On a chilly midweek evening we stroll in without a booking to find two separate parties are booked into two of the three spaces. It's early and we ask about the all-empty tables in the third space, a cosy room separated from the restaurant with entry via Barker St, but we're told they are all booked. There are tables available outside on the slightly sloping footpath where rolldown blinds help shield from the wind; but the lack of braziers or heaters makes it chilly dining.

With glasses of Sancerre in hand, we watch the procession of partygoers flood the restaurant as specials are explained and orders taken.

The menu consists of seasonal specials and continental classics, most there since day one.

This family-friendly environment is modelled on the classic French bistro, while the adjoining cortile offers a quieter, more intimate experience. Whether for a luncheon, dinner, private party, or coffee, this New Farm institution offers a warm welcome. Chef Beau Downs has returned after a seven-year stint perfecting his craft in Europe and New York. The most popular dish is his soy lime chicken.
