Lovin' live music since 1993

The Gov, in Hindmarsh, has been home to Adelaide's live, original music scene since around 1993. And it doesn't matter what type of music you're after, "from cabaret to punk, folk to rock, hip-hop to electronica," The Gov has it all, they understand music is a way of life.

And to seal the deal they also serve fresh, tasty food from wood fired pizza to more traditional pub fare.

The Gov is also an active member of the local community hosting clubs and gathering groups, information sessions, charity events,  monthly events for the physically handicapped and fundraisers with various organisations.

There was some confusion initially about whether we could eat there or not as the staff weren't sure whether the people that were seated at the table were going to be staying or whether they were just having drinks before they went to a function at the Entertainment Centre. There was no offer to put us on a waiting list if a table did eventuate, we were basically told to wait and see. Even after we told them that we'd be having a drink in the bar it was up to us to keep checking to see whether a table was available.

A table came up and we decided what we wanted and food was ordered. At this point we were told that we had to order drinks at the bar, which is fine, except that after taking orders and getting to the bar it turned out they were out of the wine that we wanted so had to go back to the table and then return to the bar. Meanwhile, it turned out that the kitchen was out of one of the dishes that we'd ordered so we had to choose another. When the bruschetta turned up it was poor. The bread hadn't been toasted well and the topping was a real let down. The remaining meals were ok - nothing really to rave about. A group of five sat down after us (but still reasonably early in the night maybe 7.30pm) and I was glad that we'd arrived when we had, because by this time the kitchen had run out of half the menu...

Open mic night is Wednesday with the famous Adelaide muso, Terry Bradford who runs Round Records. Terry skillfully coordinates singers, ukelele players and the occasional karaoke wannabe who has wandered in hearing the music. Some of the people who get up are so good they're breath taking. No doubt someone will be "discovered" here soon. Terry's band The Texettes play on Wednesdays too. The meals in the front bar are excellent - substantial and something there for everyone. Current personal favourite is the open chicken pie while listening to some great local live music.
