  • Bovine

IT'S not a big stretch to imagine that the interior of a restaurant named Bovine has a rustic, bucolic ambience and that in itself is disturbing.

Serious intent in the food, wine and service make Bovine much more than a steakhouse Or at least it could be if the designers had been out of touch with their inner-minimalists. Bovine is at the back of the Normanby Hotel, famous for attracting large crowds of Gen Y revellers and smaller crowds of brooding footy players. It's mid week, and that mental picture seems out of place in this well turned out room that cleverly gets across its mission statement.

  • Bovine at the Normanby

IT seems that Queensland pubs are committed to owning the steak market - during the past decade, one or two places have chased gastro-pub glory with steak merely a sideline, a situation that works in every other state.

But, in Queensland, it seems that if it ain’t steak, it ain’t a pub restaurant. The latest and most alluring arrival on the pub-restaurant scene is Bovine. The name says it all – this is a place that follows the beef creed dogmatically. There’s plenty of leather and patches of cowhide, solid wooden tables and subtly etched glass panels, all of which make for an inviting dining room. The menu is beef-centric, but it isn’t just steak. You can have your cow in other guises, as well as pork, lamb and a good selection of seafood. A run of six charcuterie platters (well, really five with one antipasto) is the highlight of the entrees and the “Beef” ($23) was terrific.
