The Red Hummingbird

Directions
Cryptic and Coy as Melbourne bars love to be, nestled away in this Moroccan oasis is the Red Hummingbird in the heart of the City. An open rooftop overlooking the cities skyline provides a tranquil setting for any occasion. The cocktails are made with quality spirits and the bar menu provides just what you need if coming for a pre dinner meal.

I have so many fond memories of this place - from people watching with my girlfriend during our single years, to catching up with close friends (now living interstate) for a catch up. The place serves great cocktails with a huge selection of wines and do this in style without being pretentious. Definitely one of Melbourne's gem!

It’s easy to get all a’flutter in this ode to decadence and luxury. Famous for its Bali-inspired rooftop bar, replete with silk pagoda and red lanterns, the RH takes lavishness up a notch with its very own “Opulent Corner”, an intimate sanctuary tucked up within the cocktail lounge. Plush, ornate and low-lit, this is a classy bird indeed.

It is the right time of year to set yourself up for an evening in the Hummingbird's rooftop bar.

Melbourne's a reasonably big city but there are times when I marvel at the sheer number of bars that just seem to pop up out of nowhere - or, worse for my cred, that have been there for yonks but I've managed to walk straight past. The Red Hummingbird - perched as it is between a laundromat and the five-buck-chuck-cocktails, counterfeit Hello Kitty, bulk-spices-and-nuts stretch of Russell Street - is one such establishment. When its door is shut and the after-work queue hasn't started snaking outside, it's all too easy to stride past the place. A flight of dimly lit stairs takes you to the first floor and main bar, a long-ish room kitted out with the usual jumble of banquettes, small wooden tables and mirrors, but done in a way that somehow manages to avoid the same-old-same-old stench of interior-design death. How you experience the first floor and the rooftop bar depends on your capacity to withstand the after-work drinks crowd, with whom the Red Hummingbird is particu...

The rooftop bar at the Red Hummingbird is a place to feel gratitude towards smokers.

Even if you think that smokers are filthy, depraved beasts directly responsible for all the evil in the world, it may be time to jump down from that high horse and think about the good they have done. For without the weak-willed and orally retentive among us, the Government would never have been forced into legislating smoke-free environments for the sake of the Greater Good, and Melbourne's bars would not have been hit by a tsunami of well-appointed, all-weather outdoor space. Without smokers, we might still be sipping chardonnay in a hole while reading a book, instead of knocking back mojitos on a rooftop lanai being dazzled by city lights. The rooftop bar at the Red Hummingbird is a place to feel gratitude towards smokers. Two stories above street level, the roof has been given a Bali-resort going-over, complete with hanging wicker chairs, palms, timber decking, candles and heated, undercover areas for those rare occasions when Melbourne's weather does not resemble the tropics...
