I recently took a few friends for an impromptu light lunch at the Waterloo. This was the first time I had eaten at the Waterloo, I had been in a few times for a beer and check out the new surrounds.

I really liked that fact that they kept the Art Deco theme in the older section of the pub, however one room near the stairs appeared to be an after thought with a very large meeting room style table and chairs everywhere. The furniture in this room had no connection with any other part of the Hotel.

Onto the food. We dropped in for a sample of their Tappas menu. I am not on that usually looks forward to tapas, however we thought if we were going to test the chef, the tapas is the way to go (anyone can cook a steak).

One word FANTASTIC! The range of tapas was exciting, however the eating was a great experience. Real serviettes, silver cutlery, a charming and smiley young waitress made our experience a 10 out of 10. Dot get me wrong, I do not give high scores lightly, in fact it has been some years that the food and service in a restaurant has got me excited, but the Waterloo did!

Only issue I have is there lunch menu (not the tapas), is very limited with a lot of steak trying to fill the blank spots on the menu.

If the chef can create fantastic tapas, why cant he be a tad more adventurous with the lunch menu.

The renovations are fantastic! The decor is just amazing, the colours, textures and fittings are a sea of colours that mix in well with each other. The seating is relaxed and quite fancy.
For the staff, they are polite and professional, they make you feel welcome. Perhaps a bit more personality would be nice so its not so formal but other than this it was a delight.

Service of drinks, not so great. The area where we were in was table service. They tend to leave you for a bit and are not constantly asking if anyone would like a drink. Could get more sales and customer satisfaction this way.

Food - We had the chicken pasta and it was delicious. If you love a creamy, smooth flavoursome sauce then this is for you. For me, it was a 9.5/10 for the taste.
Service for the food - Terrible!! It took 1.30 hours for our meal to come to the table. The hotel needs to be aware the majority of the clientele during lunch are office workers and are required to go back to resume work.

Overall i would go back but not i'm not inclined to return during lunch due to the food delay. I would definately recommend it if you are not on time restraints.

Will a fancy makeover elevate thd historic Waterloo Hotel from has-been to hot spot?

My wife and I went to Coles for Sunday lunch. Not to the deli section of our local supermarket, but to the company's latest refitted inner-Brisbane venue - the Waterloo Hotel. It's a Queensland thing: here, if you want to have a retail liquor store, you need to own a pub.

I reckon the Waterloo follows the Coles philosophy - profitable, smart enough to pass muster and broad enough in scope to please the majority.

For starters, the renovation is schmick. It was a pub with a daily attendance that I reckon (and I've spent a few years living and working close by) was less than the nails on your collective digits. But since it has been reborn, the Waterloo has become a busy place.

Its lounge, restaurant and other rooms are decadently, but differently, attired with an open flow between each and a large, central bar. The whole place is light, airy and very good-looking.

The menu is creative, drawing on Asian and European cuisine. It begins with tapas, progressing ...
