Japanese 'izakaya' dining in Surry Hills

Toko Restaurant and Bar in Surry Hills offers patrons a unique dining and drinking experience. The cocktail lounge serves sakes and cocktails that have been inspired from Japan. With a restaurant on site, you can combine pre- or post-dinner drinks with a meal; the cuisine draws upon influences from the land of the rising sun. Meanwhile, the decor is stunning, with the magnificent, glowing lighting sculpture taking centre stage along with the bar, which is an accomplishment in the woodwork art of joinery.

We take bookings for lunch only. For dinner we suggest you arrive early and enjoy a drink at the bar.

Had an amazing dinner, it really exceeded my expectations. It was so hard to pick from the menu because everything sounded incredible. We started with cocktails which were very good and then champagne. To be honest I can't remember the exact dishes we had (as it was a while ago) but I think it involved edamame, sushi, a fish dish and a meat. Every dish was perfect and every mouthful was thoroughly enjoyed. We definitely made the right decision in ordering dessert. Mine came on a beautiful wooden serving plate, on a leaf, in a cup, with the most goregous little wooden spoon. So beautifully presented and boy was it delish. Some sort of fruity soft deliciousness with a tough top which you cracked open. My friend had a chocolate plate which was equally enjoyed. Loved our night here.

always enjoy a restaurant that has a set menu as they make all the hard decisions for you! the food is fantastic and fresh however their service could improve a little. We sat outside which was great but it looked like it would be good to sit inside at the bar near the areas where they are preparing the sushi and grilling everything.

Love it. One of our favourite places to eat in Sydney, without a doubt.

Love Love Love sitting at the sushi bar and watching them do their handywork while munching on edeme beans.... :D

One of my most favourite restaurants in Sydney. I recently went with a group of friends and we all had the tasting menu, it was incredible. Everything was so fresh. Each dish came out at a perfect time and was presented beautifully. A few of the people we were with weren't a fan of raw fish but ate it and loved it. The wine menu was also fantastic and staff gave great advice on what wine to get throughout the courses. Every staff that served us introduced themselves and gave us great service. We finished the night with cocktails and i must reccomend the fairy floss martini it was fantastic. Will definately be back again very soon, perhaps not for the degistation as it was a tad on the expensive side but certainly to try more of their great dishes.

Gorgeous restaurant - great service and beautiful food. You can't go past the soft shell crab - delicious. Great array of wines also - one of the best restaurants in Sydney.

This place has execellent food. Some very interesting combinations and always tastes great. The price is actually reasonable unless you drink too much. Their alcohol is a little expensive. This place is great for groups and sharing. Get there early as you can't book.

Very good sushi and sashimi - you can sit at the counter and watch them prepare. A bit pricey but it's a nice space and the bar is a cool place to hang out.

There's a shining ray of light in a beautiful, dusky space - the barmen who strive for perfection. It's all about darkness when entering Toko. At night, the restaurant and bar lighting is set to moody low, so anyone arriving must stand blinking for a few seconds to let the eyes adjust. Anyone also whacked forcefully on the shoulder by the outside edge of Toko's front door as it opens must expect to reel across the entrance area like a drunk. Both these things happen to me upon entering the spiffing, yet dusky, interior of this hot'n'cool establishment. Sister to a sushi bar in Paddington of the same name, Toko inhabits the old MG Garage site and fairly throbs with smartly dressed handsome people, a striking interior design and well coiffed (head and face) barmen who take their craft very seriously. When my night vision kicks in and the throbbing in my shoulder subsides, Toko's delights are clear. First up, this is no snobby place. No one guards the front door with a clip...

Sake is what it’s all about at Toko. The food combo is Japanese with an Aussie twist but the experience starts at the bar. Mixologists whisk up exotic fruity-flavoured cocktails with a traditional sake base in a whir of activity – perfect with a pre-dinner snack of sea-salted edamame (steamed soy beans). Seafood delights are too many to list but the ika no kari kari age alias crispy squid with green chilli and lime will seal the deal on a repeat dinner reservation. That’s before you discover the crispy soft-shell crab with wasabi mayonnaise and then there’s the rainbow of sashimi served up on ice – ocean trout, tuna, king fish, snapper, eel, mackerel... The no-booking, get- here early or you’re out on your ear policy is slightly annoying but that’s just how it shakes on Crown.

A fun Japanese newcomer is worth shouting about. Just don't wake the neighbours.

A touch of eastern flair sends this Japanese-influenced cocktail list in the right direction.

I CAN'T find fault with Toko and that's saying something because fault-finding happens to be one of my talents. I'm also very good at jay-walking and scoffing hot chips. But enough about my gifts; let's talk about Toko. The restaurant and bar is a real looker, for a start. It's generously proportioned and airy, with big, summer-friendly front windows. Whoever designed it has made fantastic use of wood in both the architectural detailing and the furniture, the palette is warm and autumnal and the lighting is sexy.
