Transit Cocktail Lounge

Directions
The Transit Cocktail Lounge is located on the second floor of the Transport hotel in Melbourne's Federation Square.

With live music most nights of the week, a list of impressive cocktails and a large terrace with a great view of the city it's no surprise it's popular.

This bar is so fabulous that I almost didn't review it, wanting to keep it a secret. But I promised the band's drummer...

This is as good as it gets. When you have been checked out by all the security guys milling at the door and gone up the two flights of stairs, rapture awaits. Who could argue with being in a posh bar on the second floor of the taxi bar in Federation Square overlooking the Yarra, Southbank and half the city? Nobody. Even the toilets have wonderful views over Flinders St. station. It's a medium-sized bar, not a cavern. The seats are nice and big and comfy - there's much more seating outside on the balcony. The staff are fabulous and attentive - no numbers on poles here, they ask you where you're sitting and they'll remember your face. The drinks are not too pricey, though the coffee is $5. There are beautiful waitresses and waiters carrying trays of cocktails through the crowd. The bar staff will insist that what they have is fried potato slices, not chips or wedges, and when you get your fairly small bowl for $6, you can see what they mean - but Wow! I challenge you to find better wedges anywhere in Melbourne. I've never had better.

The band on Saturday nights is The Shuffle Club. If you think jazz is boring and you can't dance to it, think again. This band is SERIOUSLY HOT! They're wonderful musicians and when the sax player does his solos, they're as good as anything you ever heard - exciting, inventive, thrilling. The dance floor is small and there are always some really good dancers, and it's quite friendly. The band knocks off at midnight, though, and by two the bar is quiet.

And when you get your glass of wine to go out on the balcony for a breather and a smoke, and you look at the $100 million view, you tell yourself that there can't be too much wrong with a country where poor people like you and me can mingle with millionaires and people who live on the 50th floor of the apartments across the river. This is pure class. And yet it isn't crowded! You feel like a millionaire. You feel like you are in Paris. It doesn't get any better. This is the best. The rest are the rest.

One of my fave places for yummy cocktails and jamming live jazz music...unlike so many manic places in the city Transit Lounge always offers a fun, yet cruisy evening. Perfect for a date or somewhere to go with friends where you can actually hear each other over the music with out yelling! You can sit outside and enjoy the scenic cityscape view from the MCG to Southbank or cuddle up on a couch and hide out in private. Perfect ending to a night!

Not to be confused with the oft-rambunctious public bar on the ground floor, this swanky salon oozes old school cool. Table service? Certainly. Low-key jazz? But of course. Flattering lighting? Indeed, madam. Towering nearly 10 metres above Fed Square, Transit also has one of the best locations in town, and takes advantage of it with a massive terrace swooping the sights from Docklands to the MCG. Late opening hours allow plenty of time to contemplate the view.
