Tuscan Bar's Italian-inspired fit-out is definitely lavish, but it manages to avoid the more Franco Cozzo-esque trappings.
When it comes to the interior design and menu construction of bars, there is a thin line between something being "inspired by" (like a movie, a regional cuisine, an existential nightmare) and being themed (authentic Irish pubs). And while traversing that line, it's all too easy for these "inspired by" venues to teeter on the edge of meta-irony or even ridiculousness; Baroq House's total immersion experience springs to mind. Such was the worry when I saw the Tuscan Bar's lavish chandeliers from Bourke Street. With Baroq and Carlton's bonkers Il Duce, is there really room in Melbourne's main drinking district for another bar with the decorative subtlety of Gianni Versace's box of coloured crayons? Fortunately, the sparkly lights are something of a misnomer, because while Tuscan Bar's Italian-inspired fit-out is definitely lavish, it manages to avoid the more Franco Cozzo-esque trappings of the genre.
