This company is the worst experience I have ever had with tradesman. Overcharged, huge quotes for work that was expected to be done in the 2 hours they were there and still didn't do anything except 'diagnostics'. Muddled around for the 2 hours, then wouldn't leave the house when asked to until they did "something" that took 20 mins to the power box then charged $1300 for it. The management were rung about the behaviour of tradesman!!

Awful! $75 call out, plus $55 per half hour for diagnostic work, puddled about the place for an hour and a half, and left me with a $250 bill and nothing fixed. Then sent me a quote for $1600! The quote included $90 to change a spotlight bulb!!! The same work was complete by another electrician for $400!

Awful company. Charged us $150 for "consultation", did nothing and requested another $2500 for fixing our issue. Avoid that company at any cost, there're plenty of other electricians that don't charge ridiculous "service fees"

    User Beware...
We called Universal Electrical on two separate times and were specific on the work we wanted quoted, fit 2 oyster lights and a 3 way light switch. We were quoted $75.00 call out fee and $55.00 per half hour. Once they had removed the lights they then turned around and said btw the cost of the job jumped to $210.00 for the first light and $165.00 to fit the second light plus the $75.00 call out fee. They also forgot to mention that the quotes were exclusive of GST so they added another 10% to the cost. We had no option but to accept the new quote ($495) because they had already removed the lights. They are the most deceitful company I have ever dealt with. First and last time I'll be using them and wont be recommending them either.

Called them out to fix a wiring fault. The person turned up and did nothing on the first visit. Said they needed to come back with 2 guys to make repairs. They were advised that they needed to provide a quote before any other work took place. That person returned alone - quoted $7000 for repairs and charged $75 call out, $165 diagnostics and $380 task charge for replacing a circuit breaker that wasn't faulty. Strongly recommend you avoid engaging this company.

Similar experience to "CableJointer" (below). Quoted $150 (+ GST) to replace a simple dimmer on top of the $130 (+ GST) call out / work fee. Outrageous prices.

I lodged a complaint with Universal Electrical Services to which they responded that they would "discount" the call-out fee the next time I engage its services - there won't be a next time.

I too am of the opinion that Universal Electrical Services is a do not use electrician.

I needed a fuse replaced/updated to a circiut breaker on the main baord. When called out, I was instructed to sign a piece of paper stating that the call out rate was $75 and $55 per half hour labour. So I signed it, not reading it as I'm short sighted, assuming that would be a part of the total bill.

Then got a "quote" that the job was going to cost $950. Even an old cable jointer like me knows that that quote was in fairy land. Asked for a breakdown, and recieved jibberish nonsense. Was told I had to pay $143 ( including GST ) for "diagnostics" Hiuh ? It was me who told him what was required, with no "diagnostics" performed.

Result - request for payment denied, and one shonky electrician dispatched from the premises.

PLEASE get more than one quote if unsure about anything and DO NOT sign anything on trust until AFTER the job has been completed.

Universal Electrical Services is a do not use company in my opinion.

I wanted some sensor lights fitted up at my workshop.
2 guys turned up within 45mins of my call. They suggested to use good quality sensors as they would last longer and do a better job. They had all equipment needed with them and the work was completed within an hour and half and i didn't even find a wire off cut on the ground. The guys were presentable and proffessional. I have had other sensor lights fitted by other conatractors and they used the cheapest sensors they could find. Now I have to stand under the lights before they come on. If you want the right job done by a proffessional out fit Use Unviersal Electrical. I will get them back to repair the jobs done by the other contractors. Get what you pay for in life - these guys were spot on. They are now on my prefered list of suppliers. Thanks guys.

After paying over $1000 for two simple jobs they had the nerve to DEMAND more money or they would not finish the work. I refused so they left both jobs unfinished and with damage to my property.

A friend finshed the work and noted that an experienced electrician would have done it in less than half the time and a third of the cost.

I asked for their qualifications when they started saying that the management wanted more money but they refused and started to get agitated when I insisted.

Not a service that I could ever recommend.

What a shame you did not look up all the complaints before engaging. They are skilled in avoidance and customer service is pathetic.I tried complaining to fair trading who advised me they are helpless in these matters

Plugged an appliance into what turned out to be a faulty power board resulting in power loss to entire house. Verified that no individual fuses had blown and that problem was probably a blown barge fuse.
Consulted local yellow pages, compared fees quoted and selected Universal Electrical.
They confirmed that barge fuse had blown and they recommended completely new safety switch installation on all circuits with new main fuse located in fuse box. Total quote $6,052.00. Alternatively an additional $1355.00 to install XLPE wiring from supply to house.
Pressured by defrosting fridge and freezer and no power, we reluctantly accepted the $6,052 quote.
Upon completion of the work, one lighting circuit constantly tripped, indicating a fault in the original house wiring. I was advised that they would spend minimal time in trying to locate and rectify the fault as part of the contract. In doing so, they undid wiring to one light fitting leaving wires exposed and cut wiring so short to another wall fitting that it was difficult to reconnect. They then advised that they would charge $5800.00 to rewire the entire lighting circuit. We naturally declined and had the problem fixed PLUS the two disconnected lights reconnected PLUS another minor fault rectified, by another contractor for less than 4% of the Universal quote.

As it turned out, replacement of the wiring would likely not have located the fault.
Further inquiries have suggested that the $6052 job should have been in the vicinity of $2000.

Unless money is no object, I would definitely NOT recommend this contractor.

Paid over $3000 for a fusebox and was left after installation with a red tag when I refused to pay a further 2300 for it to be earthed.Competitive quotes reveal an overcharge of over 4 times .The tradesman also wished to put conduit piping through
the living and dining room.I strongly recommend you get a further quote if you are considering using

I used them yesterday. I was told on the phone they could do the work that afternoon. $75 call out plus $55 per hour. When they arrived they said they would need to arrange for 2 more staff to do the job and it would be $110 per hour for each plus $55 per hour for the apprentice. I was a little shocked and asked for a quote. The quote was $1,644.00 and they charged me $82 for the pleasure. I felt I had been completely over charged.

Showed up when they said they would, gave excellent advice on a number of electrical issues, and worked quickly. All in all went well above and beyond what an average electrician would do. Would highly recommend to others.

Before using this electrician, I recommend that you obtain quotes from other electricians as pricing for an after hours service may well cost substantially more than within normal business hours.

My 82 year old mother in law had her safety switch circuit breaker trip and called this company. She was quoted $8552.50 to rewire entire unit and a new switchboard. I had local electrician who I know visit and found nothing wrong with switchboard or wiring. Also, the quote for the switchboard was over $2500.00 and my electrician advised me that a new switchboard for her unit should only be about $800.00. I would NOT recommend.

Aririved late, took 30+ minutes for morning tea and did not deduct the time from bill. Took qualified electrician 8 hours and offsider for 6 hours to install 4 power points (cables already in the walls), oven main connection (supply and instalation of new cable) and one ceiling light (cable in the wall). Only did half the job requested, promised quote for remaining work hasn't arrived - two weeks now passed. Would not recommend them to anyone - slow workers and over charged.
