Reviews of Update Bathrooms

  • Our bathroom experience with Update Bathrooms was fantastic! The team at Update were professional, worked like dogs in 38+ heat, courteous and basically did exactly what they said they would do. The whole process took roughly little under 2 weeks and it was a a very detailed renovation in a tiny windowless room. The walls and roof were all replaced due to asbestos and everything had to be remodeled. Thank you Kerry and the team - you have turned our tradesman's dank urinal restroom into a Princesses Powder room!
  • Renovating can be a real hassle especially when you have young children but Benny and Kerrie made the entire experience run smoothly. The great thing about update bathrooms is they are able to assist you with practically all your home renovations and you don't have to bring in anyone else. We had a complete strip out and rebuild of our kitchen and bathroom, tiling throughout the house, removal of architraves in our dining area and window frame built and installed for our servery window. Couldn't be happier with everything and they also offered ideas and input from start to finish which gave us the best possible outcome
Thank you some have and I will be recommending you to everyone

  • I've noticed a range of comments on this website so thought I would share my experience with Update Bathrooms.

Firstly, I've never commented on a website / forum so think it's important that I make the following clear; I am a genuine customer (September 2015) and prior to starting the project had never dealt with / met / or even heard of Update bathrooms or anyone employed by them or associated with them. I found Update bathrooms online and am willing to back my words by inviting people to contact me to verify my comments and to see the before and after photos that I took.

Our story:among other bathroom firms that I won't shame, I invited Update Bathrooms to come and quote on a complete bathroom renovation. Our house was built 1905, a semi in Sydney, and the combined bathroom and laundry were in an absolutely terrible condition. The scope of the project involved knocking a wall out, all new plumbing for a new layout, new walls (battening and sheeting over the existing bad brick walls), a new door, install new windows x 2, a new ceiling (lowering the ceiling to 2400), a new floor, new electrics, basically what I would consider to be the most comprehensive bathroom renovation.

I was actually surprised when Kerry turned up for the quote on-time (the only company that did turn up on time). He then sat with me at the dining table to talk about the bathroom. We talked and brainstormed for an hour or two over ideas and configurations. I don't know if that's a regular thing that all customers get, or if it was because we seemed to get along.

Kerry used his iPad and typed up a price there and then and emailed it to me on the spot. The quote had allowances for tiles and things like the bath/toilets/cabinet/fittings etc. From that meeting, I formed the opinion that Kerry knew what he was talking about and a week later asked update bathrooms to go ahead with the work.

I paid a deposit and a few weeks later was given a 'pencil it in' date for the project. In the meantime my wife and I chose our tiles/components and were given a copy of what we chose.

As our house only has one bathroom, we were required to move out and we booked some holidays. Two weeks prior to the start date, I confirmed the install day and we went on holidays (nervously) the day before the commencement.

To me, safety and security are paramount so I found it difficult at first to trust tradesmen in our house in my absence. Update bathrooms didn't know this, but I prearranged my neighbour to be a super spy and keep an eye on the proceedings and keep me informed as to the progress and the tradesmen's activities. Each day she would do random visits and always found the tradesmen to be working in the bathroom doing what they were meant to be doing, and not sitting on the lounge watching TV or in other areas of the house where they shouldn't be. Both Kerry and my neighbour would separately contact me and tell me what was happening with progress and the two versions married up.

The door: I'm both amazed and impressed of the effort spent in getting the door done properly. The wall (brick) that the door is in varied by about 30mm from top to bottom, ie, the wall is on a slant (not vertical). They did remedial work on the wall and door frame and discovered that some metal (a lintel) was needed above the door to replace a rotten piece of timber. Anyway the door looks perfect and is even hung with real hinges (not those rubbish quick fit hinges). There was a bit of complaining about it from Kerry, I don't think he realised just how hard it was going to be when he quoted it. I had to pay an extra amount for the lintel but that was discussed as the problem was discovered, and not a 'throw on' to the bill at the end.

Windows: They fitted two aluminium windows into the 100 year old double brick wall. The wall was on an equally bad angle as the door wall, but the windows are fitted perfectly. They even tiled the windows in - a look you'd expect to see in a hotel.

Tiles: They can't have the credit for choosing the tiles and colours (my wife gets that) but Update get the credit for the instal and craftsmanship. Only one tile wasn't perfectly aligned, but no one else can see what I'm talking about because it's behind the vanity.

Time frame. So you know I'm real and not telling tales, there is some negativity. The process took longer than expected and we had to live with the in-laws for a week after we got back from the holiday. I will say this though, a kind of modified version of a Benjamin Franklin quote: the sweetness of good quality remains long after the bitterness of any delay is forgotten (nowhere near as poetic). Inevitably the delay turns out to be a positive as it's clear to me that Quality was never sacrificed by a push to finish on time, a genuine surprise given the project was a set fixed price and not pay by the hour.
The project took longer than expected, but the results are amazing.

  • After our recent experience with Update Bathrooms I find it hard to believe the positive comments below. Either Kerry and Benny have been posting their own favourable reviews or there is considerable inconsistency in the quality of their service.

We share the same disappointment with those who also had to wait a very long time to have their bathroom started. We waited almost a year from when they took our $1000 deposit and our bathroom took almost 6 weeks before it was fully usable.

The job wasn't complicated, but on several occasions during the renovation I was left stunned at the level of hostility directed to both me and my wife when we asked simple questions. Requests to fix newly installed PC items that leaked were met with excuses about the product and they seemed less interested in resolving the problem and more interested in fast-talking their way out of fixing it.

There were numerous confrontations over minor issues and in the end I was not comfortable having them in our home. Its interesting to read similar experiences from other reviewers, I just wish we read them before we started the renovation. In retrospect, the loss of our deposit perhaps would have been a small sacrifice considering the additional time, cost and frustration involved. We are now employing other tradesmen to fix their mistakes because the bathroom is still incomplete.

Benny and Kerry were rude, aggressive, dismissive, and acted like bullies.

Here's a few of their choice quotes:
"You don't know what you're talking about"
"I've had enough of this, we're going round in circles"
"Stop playing one against the other"

    and, my favourite,

"I'm sick of coming back to fix things that you now say don't work. Give me my money."

I would NOT RECOMMEND Update Bathrooms and regret using their service.

  • Last two comments are the same as our experience. We got our deposit back, but no apologies just arrogance. Completely bad experience with unpleasant tradesmen. Thankgoodness though they never got to touch our home. We waited four and a half months.
  • Highly UNrecommended! I could usually rely on reviews posted on this site, but not sure what happened this time. We had pretty much similar experience to Alisha below. Update Bathrooms failed to provide us with a set start date or clear instructions. They were just so wishy-washy every time. Whenever we enquired them about approximate start date, they tell us that they "will call back" - but never did - even after waiting for several weeks. Finally, after 3 months of multiple phone calls and no progress, they've told us that they'll be starting in "3 weeks". 3 weeks went past, heard nothing from them. It costed us several more phone calls to be given another start date in "3 weeks" - again, heard nothing from them. At this point, we've lost trust in them, and decided to sign up with different company recommended by our friend. Glad that we did. The staff from the company answered ALL our questions with confidence. They promised that they will start in 4 weeks and they DID start in 4weeks! They remained easily contactable, and gave us clear instructions. Sure, we had to pay more but we'd rather have our bathroom done by someone who we could trust.
Update Bathrooms became extremely rude and made some insulting comments when we told them about job cancellation. They ended up holding onto most of the deposit.
So if you happen to be reading this, please BEWARE. We strongly advise you to find someone else recommended by your friend (or anybody you know)!!

  • We recently renovated our ensuite with Kerry and Benny and the result was fantastic. Kerry had some great ideas that helped us design the renovation and was quick to get the job done. In particular, the house was never left in a mess when the guys left for the day. We changed our minds a few times during the process with a minimum of fuss. I would be happy to recommend Update Bathrooms to anyone. Benny, you were great mate, thanks
