As a foodie a visit to Vue de Monde was high on our list when planning this Melbourne trip. We knew it was going to be pricey but we also knew it was going to be a dining experience - and it was. From the moment we stepped in the door the service was amazing without being intrusive. The staff worked well together and knew where we were up to throughout the night. I love the fact that there is no menu and that each course is explained as it is presented. We went for the Gastronomes menu and the staff made sure to find out if there was anything that we weren't particularly fond of. We went for the wine match option and the sommelier was very tactful in determining how much we wanted to spend. We went for an option at the more expensive end of the scale and we had some brilliant aged wines. The staff whilst extremely knowledgable about the menu were also knowledgable about the produce and cooking methods. If they were unable to answer it was no trouble to find out. Love the open kitchen so you can get a feel for how the food is created.

If you are on a budget for dinner, this is not the restaurant to dine at. If you appreciate good food and wine then this is a place to check out. I really enjoyed the foie gras and the dessert.
If you are a little tight of cash but still would like to experiencea meal at Shannon's award-winning restaurant then why not book in for lunch where you get a two-course meal for $55. It may be an expensive lunch compared to a $9 meal deal from a take away joint but you will understand what the hype is all about when you get there. Also don't miss out on the toothpick dispenser - so cute!

How is this getting such low reviews? Vue de Monde is one of, if not the best, fine dining restaurants in Melbourne. The food is exceptional and the presentation is always unique and pleasing on the eye. Shannen Bennett is an extremely talented young man who needs to be commended for his dedication to always delivering quality food. I like the aspect of being able to see the team at work in the kitchen, too.

Can't afford Vue de Monde? Try Cafe Vue. Their signature 'Cafe Vue Lunch Box' is worth trying. They change the menu regularly but there is definitely an entree, main and dessert with every box. Cost about $15. Not filling for me but love the packaging.

Over-priced and over-rated restaurant. It's all about the restaurant and chef rather than it being about the customer. You are able to try delicacies (such as truffles & abalone) that are hard to find at other restaurants however overall we left feeling ripped off.

The Age Good Food Guide 2009

    Thursday, September 11, 2008

It is the quintessential occasion restaurant where prices are high but so, too, is the experiential quid pro quo.

There are traditional restaurants for passive diners and there's Vue: a modern dining room of sensory indulgence where you're expected to participate in the spectacle of dining taken to levels never seen in Melbourne. Vue is to most 'name' restaurants what Bugatti is to Bentley. It is simply more. With fastidious attention to detail at table, much has changed since the last Guide; the result is a fresher, quirkier restaurant. So too has chef Bennett delivered with new dishes/presentations/techniques demanding the attention of all in the 'audience'. It is complicated, whimsical food, sailing further from France each year. A consomme of jamon with pea foam in a flute, capped with a lettuce leaf, pork rillettes and confit quail yolk. A chilled dish of frozen, powdered goose foie with toasted rice and a Thai yellow pepper soup. A quince foam set in caramel within a white-choc cage and frozen chocolate 'soil'. Descriptions could last days. Importantly, ambiguity over pricing has be...

    Ultimate Melbourne

    Sunday, August 02, 2009

A must for the old ‘do before you die’ list, Vue de monde is the ultimate dining experience. A wonderful ceremony of fine wines, seamless service and modern French cuisine expertly prepared by rock-star-esque chef Shannon Bennett. The ‘Menu Gourmand’ is a tailored degustation selection created especially for you with a little consultation. It could include something like the exotic foie gras cigar and edible charcoal or truffle omelette. For those with champagne taste on a cleanskin budget, Bistro Vue and Café Vue give you a glimpse of the ‘Vue’ experience. Immune to the GFC? Go all-out and book yourself into the private dining room for the Dom Perignon experience at $790 per head (Insert sharp intake of breath here!) – that’s for a dizzying variety of Dom vintages and an amazing 10-course ‘Gastronome’ menu which has to be eaten to be believed.
