  • To Ying Chow
Ying Chow is an institution in Gouger St, perennially popular thanks to its low prices, the quality of the cooking and its late opening hours. Book early or be prepared to wait for one of the tables on either side of the long room or the few crowded on to the footpath outside. There's no napery and little in the way of adornment, except for the narrow coloured cards on which special dishes are written, in Chinese on one wall, English on the other. Among them are Peking duck, green beans with chilli, salt and pepper squid and vegetable hot pot. Other favourites include the shallot pancakes, scallops and/or oysters steamed with ginger and shallots, eggplant and salt and pepper bean curd. Food is served quickly, as soon as it's ready, which may mean you get your greens first and have to wait for the rest.

Advise to book in, BYO and order the BBC and duck (three ways)...amazing. The service is what you pay for, nothing terrible but nothing to write home about. They are happy to cater for extra large groups, when rolling with a bit of a crew - we opt for the 1x dish per person, minus two and that feeds even the hungriest. They are happy to top you up if you think you've shortened yourselves though. Tip: If you're here during the day, tuck into the markets behind and visit the Bun Chef for dessert.

Yingers, what can I say? Excellent atmosphere created entirely by the energy of the restaurant, as the place is totally skint of adornment and decoration. The food is divine, particulary the BBC and salt and pepper eggplant. Prices are excellent value and corkage is very reasonable.

You have missed out if you have not been here

Always a fast delight coming to this place! It does get really busy, it does get loud, but its part of how they run, its a great atmosphere if you dont mind what i said above - loud and busy. Also if you don't mind waiting for a table... stick arnd and wait for one, because the food is delicious. Otherwise, make a booking.. and do definitly try it. Prices are good as well. For some reason, it tastes even better late at night after hitting the town... hehehe

Ying Chow used to fabulous, being a walk-in on a Friday night was always a hassle but once seated, it was always a great night. Now... ok so you'll get customers due to your history, but this one won't be returning. Having a booking means squat, when you eventually get a table the dishes come out 1 by 1, the WRONG dishes come out 1 by 1! And when you suggest that, say, your chicken & pinenuts should probably have some pinenuts evident, the staff tell you *you're* the one who's made the mistake!! Yeah, the e-shand chicken and BBC are divine, but not worth the frustration. It's a real pity

Ying Chow is the bomb! Make sure you have a booking (just leave a message on the answering machine....the system works!). The Eshand Eggplant and BBC are two of the best vego dishes I've ever had (& I've tried a few). The service is fast, the prices are good & the food is amazing. What more could you ask for??

The Best food you'll ever eat. Especially the eshand chicken and salt and pepper squid. Fantastic opening hours too. Great vege options as well. Only problem is you should BOOK as otherwise you might have to wait hours for a table.
