It’s a bright, airy, traditionally decked-out sort of place that harkens nostalgically back to a simpler time, and there’s little wonder why it’s so popular
We spoke with Steph from Crabapple Kitchen to discover their local story:
What’s in the name?
The name Crabapple is derived from fond memories, where our group of friends would unite to share secrets and dream of good fortune. A place to congregate, unwind and reflect on time passed, a place of planning and organising as we nibbled on unfamiliar tart fruit, laughing and bonding; our little getaway under The Crabapple tree.
Who are we?
Crabapple Kitchen is owned and operated by Kim Coronica and Greg Feck. Greg Feck, a true Kiwi, but also now a dedicated Melburnian, has been cooking for the past 20 years, at just 39. He has spent time in London, working as a Sous Chef for several years under the likes of Jamie Oliver and Ben O’Donoghue. On return to New Zealand, he headed up the kitchen at The Bach in Taupo racking up several awards. On his arrival to Melbourne, he was employed by Stephanie Alexander at one of Melbourne’s finest institutions, Richmond Hill Café & Larder. He soon joined forces with 2010 Young Restaurateur of the Year, Kim Coronica (now his life partner) and others to build Sapore in St Kilda. As well as Richmond Hill and Sapore, Kim has owned 3 other successful restaurants, Umago, Hush-Hush and Florentine. Crabapple Kitchen is the next instalment, a place they both feel very passionately about, a place they imagine spending many years to come.
What are we about?
Food and travel! The inspiration from the menu has come from our travels around the world, especially our love of the French and Italian countryside. Much of our produce is sourced from local Victorian farmers, where possible. We also use other bits & pieces that we have discovered through our travels to ensure that everything we create is always the best quality available.
Crabapple Kitchen has been designed with the busy person in mind, an oasis in Hawthorn where people can relax the moment they step through the door. The décor, the old school hospitality, the music and even the food has a touch of nostalgia, to transport you back to a simpler time. So throw away your mobile phone, bond with friends & family, experience great food with fantastic wine, relax and enjoy!
While we like to be known as a café, with a relaxed and comfortable environment, we aim to provide a level of service and quality of food that will far exceed the customer’s expectations. Our goal is to be one of Melbourne’s finest.

What is your business famous for? Do you have a signature dish?
Excellent service, banging wine list and tasty refined food. Our signature dish is our Crabapple Sliders – baby brioche buns filled with Spanner Crab and Granny Smith apple, kewpie mayonnaise, breakfast radish and delicate herbs.
What is your favourite local business?
Our favourite local business is Glenferrie Gourmet Meats – not only do these guys have an amazing product but their service is amazing – incredibly friendly, knowledgeable and passionate about what they do.
