So! Who’s up for a nice, big mug of liquid heaven, eh? The fair city of Adelaide is brimming with spots to grab a damn fine hot chocolate, and we’ve picked out five of the best for your enjoyment.
It might sound like a grimly northern British comedy duo from the 1970s, but Booknook & Bean is actually a rather nice little café/second-hand bookshop nestled away in Topham Mall. Stroll in, browse the paperbacks, and settle down with a gorgeously tangy orange hot chocolate. This is the stuff that chilly afternoon dreams are made of, wouldn’t you say?
“Another new addition to the busy Topham Mall walkway, Booknook and Bean is a cute little book nook and coffee joint that also sells a couple of sweet treats. There is space for people to sit inside and outside and enjoy their coffee and a book from the bookshelf.” – xbabydollx
Steven ter Horst and his merry maestros of the sacchariferous arts have been honing their chocolate skills for over a decade. That means it’s fair to say they know what they’re doing, and their artisan hot chocolate range certainly reflects this. We’d suggest the ‘Aztec Chilli’, with couverture choccy, birds eye chillies, jalapeños, and various tasty spices. It’ll warm your old bones good and proper.
“Need chocolate, coffee or dessert? This is the place for you. Large selection of chocolates and some quality desserts. everything looks beautiful.” – 4chillis
Bright, modern and impeccably cool, Just Bliss Chocolates is the suave and sophisticated person’s chocolate pitstop. You know the type; Helen Mirren. Pierce Brosnan. Billy Dee Williams. Kid Rock. Anyway, this cafe/super-fancy choc shop is a marvellous place to grab a delectable prezzie or two, as well as a tall cup of hazelnut hot chocolate. This stuff is amazing!

Fine ice cream and dessert, you say? Sounds like one heck of a house! From fluffy waffles to dreamy fondue to unique dessert cocktails, St Louis is a never-ending treasure trove of sumptuous treats. This time, however, we’ve only got eyes for the St Louis Hot Chocolate. That’s couverture chocolate heated and whipped with milk, and delicately topped with fine milk chocolate shavings.
“This is such a great place for dessert or even just to take a break from the rest of the shopping crowd. The chocolates and desserts are incredible, but I would have to say that my favourite menu item is the mint hot chocolate. It has got to be the best hot chocolate around.” – nursingnotes3
True to its name, A Mother’s Milk specialises in homely, nourishing fare that’ll help you grow up big and strong. Whether you fancy mushroom ragu or a pulled pork bun, you definitely won’t leave hungry. Especially if you wash it all down with some Zokoko hot chocolate! After all, even mum believes in the odd treat (as long as you behave yourself, eat your prayers, and say your vitamins).
“WOW WOW WOW! Seriously WOW! I had heard a lot about this little place, but never had the chance to stop. I want to live closer so I can visit every week! its amazingly run by 3 guys at front of house, which really surprised me. but it was awesome to see – and they did such a great job of it. Really a place to visit while in Unley!” – TheMiddleIngredient
