Labelled “Australia’s most extraordinary art event”, the Archibald prize was first awarded in 1921 and is undoubtedly Australia’s favourite art award, and one of its most prestigious.
Held annually by the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney, The Archibald Prize is awarded to the best portrait painting, it’s a who’s who of Australian culture – from politicians to celebrities, sporting heroes to artists.
Despite the honour of taking out the Archibald prize for 2015, artist Nigel Milson has made intriguing headlines behind the story behind his painting subject, Charles Waterstreet. In a past life, Mr Waterstreet was Mr Milson’s barrister who represented the artist in court when he was being charged for armed robbery in 2012.
On show this year is also winners of the Wynne Prize which awarded to the best landscape painting of Australian scenery or figure sculpture and the Sulman prize presented to the best subject painting, genre painting or mural painting.
