Hi Heidi, thanks for taking the time to talk to us. What’s the story behind B Forever Young?
I finally decided to buy a business in August 2013. There are many reasons for doing so, beginning with my son passing away at the age of 13. His name was Brandon and he always wanted me to open a salon, hence the name, B FOREVER YOUNG, as he will always be forever young and the B for Brandon. Besides who doesn’t want to B FOREVER YOUNG? Great hair is a huge part of feeling young, fresh and beautiful.
I have been a hairdresser for 30 years and it is a passion for me, not a job. I literally came out of the womb wanting to be a hairdresser. I enjoy making people happy and I find it a very rewarding way to spend your day. My salon has a very professional but loving, warm, homely and down to earth feel, which our clients love.
What do you love the most about having a local business in the Gold Coast?
First I would say the people, we live in such a beautiful part of the world that we get to meet mostly happy and vibrant people. The weather also a very big draw card. As Gold Coasters we do spend a lot of time keeping ourselves looking great and that’s good for my business. I have made many friends through my business which is also a plus.
What made you want to start your own small business?
First and foremost, passion for my trade and in memory of my son. I also got tired of putting in so much time and effort for others and not getting the benefits. I always worked as if it were my own salon and put all my heart into it, so when my partner pointed this out to me and said you may as well own one, I finally did it.
What’s one service you offer at B Forever Young that your regulars love?
ALWAYS WALKING OUT THE DOOR HAPPY, with their hair, happy from the conversation and laughs and down to earth enjoyable atmosphere and happy affordable prices – oh and the yummy biscuits and coffee. It is my job as a professional to give my clients the best service at the lowest prices while enjoying every moment they are in the salon.
How do you go over and above to create a salon experience that people love coming back to?
I actually don’t think of it as going over and above to please clients because if you’re happy and love what you do and are good at it, it all comes naturally. I think the key to creating a memorable and happy experience for clients is to BE REAL!! I give clients the service I would expect. Too many times clients tell of bad experiences in salons due to the staff and owners not being happy and feeling like they are just going through the motions to get there pay packet.
Everyone at B FOREVER YOUNG is there because we want to be, PASSION is the key to all things beautiful. We all aspire to make people happy and have fun while giving 5 star service. I admit some people may not like our attitude – we are very down to earth and may occasionally slip a swear word or tell a rude joke.
Do you have any advice for other small businesses that are starting up?
Put your heart and soul into it, do it because you love what you do and you will succeed. You only get out what you put in. Use social media, listen and learn from others successes and failures. Surround yourself with passionate and positive work colleagues and never let a bad apple ruin everyone else’s work space.
Always have a break to look forward to and remember, business is business and friends are friends, never sacrifice one for the other.
How important do you think it is for a local business to have an online presence on websites like True Local where customers can share their experience?
ABSOLUTELY IMPERATIVE!! We live in a world of technology, everyone uses it to find anything. Gone are the days of having to pay enormous rent for walk by trade when the internet is at your fingertips.
One of the 5 star reviews on your listing says “I just want to say that I had the best experience at B FOREVER YOUNG. Heidi and her staff make you feel welcome the minute you step through the door. Cup of coffee then into the chair. My hair looks amazing. I love love love it.” Locals supporting locals is something we really believe in. How valuable have you found online reviews and feedback to you as a local business?
Reviews are extremely important to my business. A lot of my clients say they chose to try our services due to the great reviews we have on True Local, Facebook and Google. This contributes to a huge part of a clients decision making in what salon to try. It’s also a great tool for word of mouth.
B Forever Young does a really great job and getting online reviews. What advice do you have for other locals businesses who might want to increase their online reviews on platforms like True Local?
I generally ask how new clients found us and why they decided to choose our salon, then let them know that in doing so since it worked for you, if your happy with your service today and have the time, a review would be much appreciated.
We’ve noticed that B Forever Young is very active online on sites like Facebook and True Local. Why do you think it’s important to engage with customers online?
I originally did not plan to have a web site and only had Facebook (silly me). I quickly found out how much people relied on social media and the internet by asking and being told by clients, friends and business owners. I asked myself “HOW DO YOU FIND WHAT YOU NEED?” BAM, the internet. So I then created my web site, advertised on Google and was told by the young ones that I must have Instagram. After, I Googled myself to see who came up at the top of the list when looking for a hairdresser etc and found TRUE LOCAL. I then contacted True Local to find out how I could be at the top of the list and locked it in. I have had so much business through True Local and am so happy I did it.
It’s important for small businesses to have the support and recommendations of the locals to boost the community. As a small business in your community, what are your favourite local businesses in your area?
My favourite businesses are Cha Cha’s Japanese Broadbeach, Mario’s Italian Broadbeach, Evive Fast Food Mermaid Waters, Mandalas Vegan Restaurant ,TMA Accountants Robina, Healers Touch Pacific Fair, B Clinic Injectables Robina, Snap Fitness Miami, Essence of Living Yoga Mermaid Waters, Flannerys and ReFuel Depot Miami, All Time Coffee Mermaid Beach, Officeworks Burleigh, Mermaid Waters Vet.
Lastly for a bit of fun – what’s one quirky fact about B Forever Young people might not know.
We talk about everything with our clients, and are open books – we don’t hold back on our quirkiness!
