We sat down with Alan, the CEO at Service Today to discover his local small business story:

Thanks Alan for taking the time to chat wit us. Please tell us a little about yourself?

My name is Alan Magerovski, I’m the CEO at Service Today. I’m a plumber and family man with a passion for good customer service and a flair for marketing and technology.

What made you start your own business?

I started this journey as a plumber, as I was exposed to more and more customers, I noticed that there was a demand for emergency trade services. That’s what made me want to take the leap and start something of my own.

What do you love the most about having a local business?

The sense of community, getting repeat customers is great. It’s nice to know that you’ve done a good job the first time and that they trust you to take care of the next problem they have. 

What made you want to start your own small business?

I recognised that being a skilled tradesman wasn’t enough in today’s competitive world.  Aussie home owners and busy working families also demand reliable on-time performance and predictable, honest prices. All round customer service. That’s why I started this business, for Service Today to mean just that – service today.

What is your business famous for?

We get all sorts of calls between plumbing, electrical, heating and cooling. We specialise in residential services, so anything relating to the home we can help you out with and we have countless years of experience amongst everyone on the team.

How do you get the most out of your businesses? (Online, WOM etc.)

We work really hard to establish relationships with new customers as well as maintaining a strong focus on our existing 80,000+ customer base. Both online and off, we want to show our customers that we care. We do this through many avenues but our most popular by far is the Total Care Club, this is our take on a loyalty program. Our customers are loyal to us so we are loyal to them, sharing great tips, information, newsletter, discounts and vouchers with our members regularly!

How important is it for you to have a strong online profile and attract new leads on sites like True Local?

It is very important. The home services industry is bursting with healthy competition. The best way to stand out is to have a strong online profile. Naturally, customers want to know what to expect from a company. That’s why it’s important to make sure there’s lot’s of great information about you out there.

What is your favourite local business(es) in your area?

I really support Jude’s Bathrooms, bathroom renovations. Great for when plumbing or electrical Service Today jobs turn into full scale renovations.

Do you have any advice for small businesses just starting up?

Think like a customer. They’re the ones that will keep you in business, you want to make sure they’re getting the most out of your service!

What’s one quirky fact about your business?

When I started, there was nothing planned, no long term vision yet. Originally we were just tackling plumbing, it was only as we grew, that other needs became clear and I realised we could fulfill these for our customers.
