Sunny, laid back, reasonably priced and increasingly sophisticated, Brisbane is a city with a golden future ahead. Whilst the Queensland capital has traditionally played bridesmaid to the two Australian urban behemoths of Sydney and Melbourne, an infusion of fresh bars, cafes, restaurants and cultural institutions in recent year’s means this city now not only has the enviable climate and access to nature, but also the cosmopolitan amenities many city slickers seek. Given the active, outdoor-focused lifestyle of Queenslanders, it makes perfect sense that Brisbane is home to an enticing selection of super healthy restaurants and cafés to help you fit right in. Here’s just a handful that have recently caught True Local’s eye…
Shop 9, 1 Enoggera Tce, Red Hill
Nestled in the leafy inner northern neighbourhood of Red Hill, Botanica Red Hill is the baby of husband and wife team Brett and Alison Hutley, two chefs who decided to bring their experience of delicious ‘real food’ salads in New York City down under. The result is a cute shopfront café where this dynamic duo spend all day preparing fresh, custom-made take away meals for busy bodies using the healthiest ingredients you can imagine – by ‘real’ they mean no chemicals, stabilisers or artificial flavours.
“Botanica hits the spot when you’re craving something tasty but good for you. I was a bit shocked by the price at first, but after seeing the quantity and quality of the food – it is worth every cent. I will be going back for a pastry next!!”
85 Vulture St, West End
What started as a popular #cleaneating blog and Instagram account by local nutritionist Jacqui Toumbas, has now transformed into a full blown café in the bohemian West End neighbourhood. As the name suggests, Miss Bliss Wholefoods Kitchen is in the business of serving up a delicious all day menu of super healthy dishes accompanied by smoothies, coffee and even wine. If that’s not enough, they also do catering and event planning so your guests are bound to be impressed by your newfound flair for the finer things in life!
“Love this place! From the decor to the food to the little jars they use for condiments!! We had the soft and gooey eggs and the acai bowl and both were fabulous! Coffee was also good and a lovely assortment of yummy looking cakes and bites at the counter! #followyourbliss”
1 Ella St, Newstead
Pronounced “no-dough”, Nodo nestled in Brisbane’s densely populated inner city neighbourhood Newstead was launched in 2014 by foodie lover and entrepreneur Kate Williams to combine her seemingly incompatible loves for doughnuts and healthy living. Thankfully for all us gluttons out there, she found a way and Nodo has since become a local institution, serving up delicious, Instagram friendly AND healthy doughnuts which are baked fresh daily and 100% gluten free.
“As a gluten free intolerant living in Brisbane, having a list of places to indulge in when you get that sweet tooth craving is always a positive thing! Nodo is one of those – where you can go quench that donut craving with some delicious and creative flavours! From raspberry and white chocolate to banana maple and pecan to strawberry chocolate – there are always new flavours popping up! Nodo will always have you coming back for more and their eat in breakfast options are just as good!”
