Cool. Quirky. Cheeky. Edgy. Laneway venues can be all of these things, and many more besides. You never know what you’ll run into as you step inside. Here’s to the thrill of discovery!
We haven’t mentioned John Mills Himself for at least two or three articles, so we think it safely counts as a secret again. It’s found up high in a century-old Heritage-listed building, and is a true haven for coffee and cocktail fans. Speaking of the latter, try the “Va Va Gina”. It’s an elegant, refreshing mix of 666 butter vodka, lemon juice, and proper Yackandandah lemon curd.
“Went here for a cocktail. Great hidden bar. Liked that the whole menu was Australian spirits and the cocktails were really inspired. One guy behind the bar, but he was awesome and gave great service.” – Anna9003
This place has one of the prettiest gates in Brisbane, and the rest of it certainly doesn’t disappoint once you head through. It’s a cool, relaxed hub of craft beer goodness, with various blends brewed onsite and many more rotating through the taps. One of our favourites is the Chilli Chocolate Porter, which is a kind of spicy, coconutty ale. It packs a lovely punch.
“Great selection of beer, funky decor.” – bargainman
Red Hook really is the place to be for Brisbane’s finest New York-style drinks and street food. Whether you’re there for a crispy taco, some spicy wings, or a preposterously enormous cheeseburger, you’re guaranteed to leave feeling very satisfied indeed. To wash it down, try a Spiked Cream Soda with vanilla vodka, ice cream and creaming soda.

Yeah, alright. We couldn’t really leave this one out, could we? Fortunately, Laneway Bar earns its place for many other reasons besides its name. It dwells above Spencer Lane, and provides a fresh, cosy and intimate setting for a sip and a bite. For something fiery, order up a Very Ginger Mule. That’s vodka, ginger liquor, lime, lychee, Monin Ginger and ginger beer. A very ginger mule indeed.
“This place is a hidden treasure. Wonderful food and excellent service.” – EmDavis200
A suave cafe with a real air of sophistication, Strauss doesn’t let its gourmet leanings get in the way of its wonderfully friendly service. From specialty beers to pressed juices to high-grade coffee, they’ll quench any thirst you put to them. As for food? We’d heartily suggest giving the Kale Salad a go. It’s made with goats cheese, apple and almonds, and it’s seriously good.
