We spoke to Els the owner of new Perth local business The Chippery & Co to hear her business story:
Hi Els. Thanks for taking to time to talk to us at True Local. Can you tell us a little about how The Chippery & Co came to be?
I have worked in the hospitality industry for 20 years and have been running venues, Event management , Sales, when I stumbled across this little venue in Northbridge the penny dropped and wanted to have my own business. I had a dream for so long that I finally made reality and creating a concept that was somewhat different to any other venues in the city.
What do you love most about having a business in Northbridge?
I love being in Northbridge because it’s a new little hub where all the cool small bars and restaurants are tucked away. It also embraces real foodies and people that appreciate quality over quantity. The area is just really positive and has a great community.
I love meeting all different walks of life and over time your customers become like your friends, it’s just uplifting to see how all other business owners support each other … It’s really refreshing.
What made you want to start your own small business?
I always had a passion for great food and unique concepts, I have been raised in a hospitality family back in Belgium and wanted to carry some of the tradition on here in Perth.
Do you have a signature dish that the locals love?
We are famous for our cones of Chips but the absolute winner are our truffle fries, soft shell crab burger and tacos , just to name a few… I created the concept around the old school take away concept, the chips are served in a cone and wrapped in paper, it just adds to the quirkiness of it all..
Mmmm…That sounds delicious Els! Now besides the Chippery & Co. What are your fave local businesses in your area?
My favourite places in Northbridge would be:
- The Shaddow Wine bar;
- Joe’s Juice joint;
- La Cholita;
- Hummus Club;
- Baby Mammoth.
Do you have any advice for small businesses just starting up?
My advice would be start small but create something unique , know your area and look for a place that’s surrounded by other solid businesses to ensure you have the foot traffic. But for me the most important thing is customer service and fresh produce as this will make or break your business.
What’s one quirky fact about your business?
One quirky fact would be that we are a small venue tucked away on the back of William street but once you find us you will never forget your dining experience 🙂
