Pavlov’s Duck

Pavlov’s Duck is as close as you can get without leaving Melbourne. Picture a large converted warehouse with a comforting air of shabby chic, and attractive wooden furnishings that contrast strikingly with the industrial echoes of its pre-cafe days. This is one of the city’s leading roti places, and the ‘Lankan Hawker Dinner’ Roti will leave you thoroughly stuffed and dreaming of balmy days in Sri Lanka. Find out more

“Luv this cafe with modern Australian brunch with Sri Lankan twist, yum! And coffee is very good too – they use Padre :)” – DRJS

This charming little cafe is worth a visit for the eccentric feature wall alone (marvel at its rickety wooden splendour!). Slowpoke also serves up darn good coffee, of course, as well as some of the finest shakshuka in town. It makes for a yummy and filling lunch indeed, comprised of perfectly poached organic eggs (complete with runny yolk), heartily spicy tomato sauce, feta and coriander. It’s a meal that conjures up images of rustic fireplaces and snuggly blankets, which makes it perfect for Autumn. Find out more

Soul Soup Cafe

We don’t know about you, but soup and cappuccino is our kind of liquid lunch. Soul Soup Cafe provides exceptional examples of both, which is why it’s one of our favourite places in the whole wide world. The grandly pillared entrance leads to friendly faces, fabulous food and a lovely atmosphere, and we’d heartily suggest the creamy vegetable soup. Warm, healthy, and served with crusty fresh bread, it’s quite simply the most delicious serving of veggies we’ve ever had. Find out more

Hardware Société

French and Spanish food made with top-quality Australian produce? Sounds like a winner! Hardware Société is one of Melbourne’s best foodie cafes, and it’s always worth the wait to get in. Behold the adorably kitsch wall of butterflies while you tuck into a big plate of warming pork belly, bacon hash, apple relish and fried eggs. It really is perfection on a plate. Find out more

“Came here for breakfast on a Thursday morning and can say the food is as good as it gets. I’ve come here on a weekend and the queue out the front speaks volumes about this place. The baked eggs with chorizo was fantastic and cooked to perfection. The decor is cute and cosy and is perfectly located in the heart of the Melbourne CBD so is frequented by a lot of city residents/students.” – svchu1

Miss Marmalade

Miss Marmalade’s talented breakfast maestros are at your command! This tucked-away little spot is a wonderful place to grab some early morning nourishment, particularly if you go for ‘The Big’. It’s got free-range eggs your way, double smoked bacon, beans, tomato, rosemary, garlic, hash browns, mushrooms, chorizo and relish on organic sourdough. It sounds like a lot but trust us, you’ll love every bite. Find out more

“What a busy little surprise this was to come across! A great selection of menu items with specialty coffee to boot. As packed as it was the service was great and the food was served in a short amount of time. The food we ordered look amazing and tasted even better.” – smileplease
