City of Hobart Carols by Candlelight

Date: 18 December

Carols by Candlelight is one of Australia’s greatest traditions, and Hobart’s looking to outdo itself this year with a wealth of festivities planned for the Royal Botanical Gardens. TV star Jimmy Giggle is playing ringmaster, marshalling colourful set of performers that includes The Scallywags, Eloise Martin, John X, and a certain large, bearded fellow with a trademark red hat (no, not Fred Durst). Not to mention the choir, of course! There’s also space for a picnic and selection of yummy food truck, so you don’t have to sing along on an empty stomach. Find out more

Taste of Tasmania

Date: 28 December – 3 January

Location: Princes Wharf No. 1, Hobart

Taste of Tasmania is the perfect representation of all that is good about our city, bringing together its finest food, drink and entertainment for a full week of festivities. Sip on boutique wines and beers, gorge yourself on seafood, cheeses and indulgent desserts. Cheer on your favourite local bands and DJs as they serve up the soundtrack for your sumptuous odyssey through the region’s cuisine. Take the kids along to the free program of workshops and performances, and make sure you’re around for the extra-special New Year’s Eve celebrations in store for the 31st. Falls Festival

Date: 29 December – 1 January

Location: Marion Bay, Tasmania

Now entering its 24th year, Falls Festival has blossomed into an iconic, world-famous celebration of awesome tunes, cutting-edge comedy and unforgettable times. The line-up is absolutely huge, stretched over three packed days and featuring Grandmaster Flash, Childish Gambino, Marlon Williams, Ta-Ku, Alison Wonderland, Bernard Fanning and countless other stars ready to rock the place out. The setting is gorgeous, with sweeping views of Marion Bay, there’s plenty of food trucks, beer gardens, markets and tons more to keep you amused. It’s about an hour from Hobart, but it’s more worth the trip than words can really convey. Find out more

New Year’s Eve at The Taste

Date: 31 December

Location: Princes Wharf No. 1

Told you we’d be back here! The Taste of Tasmania New Year’s Eve celebrations are the stuff of legend, and we highly recommend you score yourself some tickets if you don’t already have plans. In addition to all the delectable food and drink we mentioned, the waterfront location offers a flawless view of the city’s midnight fireworks display. Acts include Lively Up, Mocane, Grim Fawker and James Parry, with special guest performers Bustamento and Kate Ceberano. Plus, a percentage of all ticket sales goes towards the Save the Tasmanian Devil Appeal, dedicated to battling the disease that the island’s most iconic animals are currently facing. Find out more
