SS16 Finders Keepers Markets

Date: 9 – 11 December

Location: Australian Technology Park, Eveleigh

A bustling carnival of over 200 stalls, the Finders Keepers Markets are a testament to the spirit, quality and innovation of the Australian indie art and design scene. Encompassing food, fashion, cosmetics, homeware, artwork, kids’ stuff and much more, this is a wonderful place to pick up a thoughtful gift or two you simply can’t find anywhere else. In addition to the markets, there’s also bars, coffee stops, food trucks and live music to keep you busy, so it’s certainly not one to miss. The Good Dog International Film Festival

Date: 2 – 3 December

Location: Joynton Park, Zetland

If you love a good film festival with an offbeat twist, the Good Dog International Film Festival fits that bill perfectly. The only requirements for the movies are that they’re both engaging and include a dog somewhere. Yep, that’s it! If last year is anything to go by, all sorts of hidden cinematic gems are waiting to be discovered. The festival is being held in balmy Joynton Park, so attendees are very welcome to bring along their own furry friends (provided they play well with others, of course). Find out more

Matsuri Japanese Festival

Date: 10 December

Location: Tumbalong Park, Darling Harbour

Japan remains a source of endless western fascination, and not just thanks to the weird Kit-Kats. It’s a country steeped in unique custom and tradition, and you can experience the best of it at the Matsuri Japan Festival. Write your name in Shodou, take part in authentic tea ceremonies and visit the amazing origami workshop, before stuffing your face with everything from kuroobi curry to green tea ice cream. Performances range from taiko drumming to breathtaking karate demonstrations, with plenty more events lined up for an unforgettable day. Find out more

Lights of Christmas

Date: 8 – 25th December

Location: St Mary’s Cathedral, Sydney

Oh yeah, it’s Christmas, isn’t it? Don’t worry, there’s one more treat left in the stocking that’s sure to tickle the yuletide itch. This year, St Mary’s Cathedral once again plays host the Lights of Christmas; a spectacular display of state-of-the-art light, sound and animation projected onto the building’s exterior. It’s got all the festive boxes ticked, including imagery of Christmas through the ages, classical depictions of Jesus and Mary, and even an animated performance of The Nutcracker. The show runs every night from the 8th to Christmas Day itself, kicked off every night by choirs from all over Sydney. It’s magic, pure and simple! Find out more
