Summernats

Date: 5 – 8 January

Location: Exhibition Park in Canberra, Mitchell

It’s loud, fast and completely exhilarating, and it’s the hottest motor show in Australia. Summernats is a ferocious celebration of pure horsepower, bringing together over 1,800 of the country’s most insane street machines. It’s four days and nights of exhibitions, competitions, concerts, awards and activities, with plenty to keep the kids occupied too. It all culminates on Sunday night with the National Burnout Masters finals, one of the most hardcore burnout contests in the entire world. It’s the unmissable revhead event of the year, and it’s always a total blast. Find out more

Portobello Road

Location: Old Bus Depo Markets, Kingston

It’s probably been a while since you finished your Christmas shopping, so it’s time to get back in the retail saddle! After all, a day spent browsing cool stuff is a very good day indeed, as far as we’re concerned. Fortunately, Portobello Road is nothing but cool stuff, flooding the Old Bus Depot Markets with a unique array of homeware, thingamajigs, fashion, knickknacks, jewellery, whatsits, kitchenware, and of course… doohickies. You never know what you might dig up amidst the hundreds of stalls, so roll up your sleeves and get hunting. Find out more

Ben & Jerry’s Openair Cinema

Date: 12 January – 19 February

Location: Patrick White Lawns, Canberra

‘Ben & Jerry’s Openair Cinema’ is one of those phrases in which every single component is awesome. A bit like ‘complimentary drinks’ or ‘all-you-can-eat pizza buffet and massage station’. Anyway, all you need to do is nip over to Patrick White Lawns, where a gigantic screen has been set up to showcase a mix of blockbuster hits (Star Wars: Rogue One), critically acclaimed dramas (Queen of Katwe) and timeless classics (Mean Girls). There’s a tasty range of food available, and they’ve even got a bar set up to whet your whistle. Lovely. Find out more

Australia Day Fireworks Spectacular

Date: 26 January

Location: Regatta Point, Regatta Place

Ooh, fireworks! Feels like we’ve only just finished with the New Year’s Eve ones, but you can really never have too many. As Australia Day draws to a hazy close, the skies above Lake Burley Griffin will explode into dazzling life, so be sure to catch it if you can. If last year’s display was anything to go by, this one’s going to be fantastic. The fireworks kick off at 9pm sharp, and will be set to a proper Aussie Day soundtrack for added effect. Bring a picnic blanket, find a good vantage point, and settle in for a good night. Find out more
