What’s Happening in Melbourne this January

The tinsel’s back in the attic, but that doesn’t mean the fun is over. Here are four fantastic events to look forward to in Melbourne this month.

Date: 1 January – 26 February

Location: University of Melbourne, Parkville

We’ll begin with a festival that has a bit of everything. Shimmerlands is the latest brainwave from the folks behind Shadow Electric, and it’s nearly two full months of awesome entertainment. The University of Melbourne serves as the worthy host, and its campus will come alive with live music, quality films, and a sumptuous bounty of well-chosen food vendors. So far, the music line-up includes Parquet Courts, Brooke Powers and Ska-BQ; with American Honey, Nocturnal Animals and Swiss Army Man amongst the cinematic treats. As for the food and drink? Expect a host of local favourites like Belleville, Burn City Smokers and All Day Donuts. Find out more

So Frenchy So Chic in the Park

Date: 15 January

Location: Werribee Park

France is coming to Melbourne, and bringing all of its greatest music, culture and grub along for the occasion. So Frenchy So Chic is a day-long party in Werribee Park, and it’s suitable for all ages to enjoy. The musical acts are Nouvelle Vague, Bertrand Belin, The Limiñanas and Deluxe, so the organisers certainly haven’t pinched the pennies in that department. Or, well, any other department, really. Food comes in the form of cute picnic hampers available to pre-order along with your ticket, as well as tons more goodies available on the day. Hope you’re prepared for a ludicrous amount of cheese and wine. Find out more

Midsumma Festival

Date: 15 January – Feb

Location: Various

It’s Victoria’s biggest LGBT arts celebration, and it’s rolling into Melbourne once more this month. This year marks the 30th anniversary of Midsumma Festival, and there’s so much stuff going on you’d have to hire a personal secretary to keep track of it all. It’s spread all across the city, with festival hubs at the Arts Centre Melbourne, Gasworks Art Park and Hare Hole. The Carnival and the signature St Kilda Pride March are definitely worth checking out, and be sure to check the festival listings for hundreds more events. Find out more

The Book of Mormon

Date: 18 Jan – 30 Apr

Location: Princes Theatre, Melbourne

If South Park: The Movie and Team America: World Police have taught us anything, it’s that Trey Parker and Matt Stone are rather handy at the whole ‘musical’ thing. The Book of Mormon, their 2011 triumph of crassness, absurdity and catchy tunes, is finally coming to Australia this month, and Princes Theatre is the place to catch it. It’s won Tony awards, Drama Desk, Laurence Olivier awards and Grammy awards, and received near-universal praise from critics in Broadway, Chicago and the West End. Basically, it’s pretty good. If you’re into musicals, religious satire or South Park, go give it a watch! Find out more
