What’s Happening in Canberra This October

Ahh, springtime in the capital! The air is fresh, the sun peeking out, and the streets are awash with pride and good cheer. Let’s see what’s on, shall we?

Living Green Festival

Date: 2 October

Location: Albert Hall, Yarralumla

We could all do with living a little greener, and naturally, the Living Green Festival is an excellent place to learn how to do it, as well as enjoy a great day out in the process. It’s all about letting producers and retailers of animal/environmentally-friendly products get together to promote their stuff, as well as hosting workshops, talks, live music and even a dog cafe! If you’re unsure about vegan food, a quick browse of the colourful stalls (especially Sweet Bones’ cupcakes…) will soon open your mind to the possibilities of ethical deliciousness. Find out more

Japanese Film Festival

Date: 14 – 23 October

Location: Capitol Cinemas, Manuka

Yep, most of us have seen The Ring and The Grudge, but there’s a whole lot more to Japanese cinema besides creepy girls with bad hair. Founded by Sydney’s Japanese Foundation back in 1997, the Japanese Film Festival has blossomed into the largest of its kind in the entire world, and this year’s edition is a real doozie. The line-up includes dark comedy crime caper Twisted Justice, dreamily surreal coming-of-age drama Night’s Tightrope, and even a special screening of the original 1954 Godzilla (which is well worth seeing on the big screen; believe us). Braddon Block Party

Date: 29 October

Location: Lonsdale Street, Braddon

Sometimes the simplest things are the most rewarding, and what’s simpler than a bunch of people gathering in the street for a good time? The first ever Braddon Block is shaping up to be something very special indeed, with markets, live performances, a float parade and even the odd street race planned for a party of epic proportions. Local artists of all kinds will be there to show off their stuff, and thousands are expected to turn out to experience the very best of Braddon. The festivities run long into the night, so a nice Sunday sleep-in is strongly advised! Find out more

Festival of Flavour

Date: 29 – 30 October

Location: Murrumbateman Recreation Ground, Murrumbateman

Canberra’s a bit of a cultural mixing pot, which means that all sorts of tasty grub is available throughout the region. Still, being the lazy so-and-sos we are, we’d much prefer to have it all brought together for us in one convenient location. The Festival of Flavour does just that, showcasing the absolute best in local cuisine and the cultures behind it. Think a rich bounty of local beers, wines, music and entertainment accompanying the delectable feast. Yep; this is gonna be good. Find out more
