What’s Happening in Melbourne This October
Melbourne has always been a bubbling cauldron of excitement and diversity, and October brings a host of new and unique events to get stuck into. We’ve grabbed just a few to stick on the calendar.
Stanley Kubrick Film Festival
Date: 6 – 19 October
Location: Cinema Nova, Carlton
The kind of intense, impossible genius that only comes around every so often, Stanley Kubrick remains the most influential, controversial and borderline-mythological figure in the history of film (phew!). To celebrate the great man’s life, Cinema Nova will be holding special screenings of his entire filmography, from his little-seen debut Fear and Desire to the Spielberg-inherited A.I. Artificial Intelligence throughout October. It’s a great chance to catch timeless classics like A Clockwork Orange, The Shining and the epic Spartacus on the big screen, the way they were meant to be seen. Find out more
Melbourne Festival
Date: 6 – 23 October
Location: Various
Victoria’s ultimate arts extravaganza returns once more, bringing a bountiful feast of music, dance, theatre and more to venues across the city. Catch the National Theatre of Scotland’s critical smash Our Ladies of Perpetual Succour in Melbourne for the first time. Hear Paul Kelly and Camille O’Sullivan breathe new life into the words of W.B. Yeats in Ancient Rain. Transport yourself to the final frontier with Star Trek’s 50th anniversary concert tour The Ultimate Voyage, and marvel at the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s unmissable David Bowie tribute, Nothing Has Changed. That’s all barely scratching the surface, of course, so make sure to scour the program. Find out more
Dogapalooza
Date: 9 October
Location: Burnley Park, Richmond
What’s the only thing better than a music festival? A dog-friendly music festival. Yep! The first and only event of its kind is back for its second year, mixing hipster festival fun with all the colourful canines you could imagine. Join local artists like The Little Stevies, Thelma Plum and Sam Lohs, not to mention all your favourite food trucks (Waffle & Shake and Crepe Expectations, anyone?). There’s also boutique dog merch vendors, washing facilities for your furry pal, and various awards to prove who truly is the coolest pooch in town. Since all the proceeds go towards Melbourne dog rescue groups, everyone’s a winner! Find out more
