The tree is up in Martin Place, there are glittery garlands in every shopping centre, and the summer air is thick with cheer. Holiday flair is everywhere, but which venues do it best? Here are some of our top picks:
Fancy: Watsons Bay Boutique Hotel
A luxury waterfront Christmas? Now that’s the kind of holly jolly treat we can get behind.
“Watson’s Bay Hotel is a fancy pants beach hotel located in a really convenient place if you are visiting Watsons Bay via ferry. I really liked this spot for its minimal seaside décor and array of indoor/outdoor seating options. The menu is themed too with a wide variety of really fresh seafood dishes which are great to share over a glass of wine or two.” – Miss Forster
Casual: The Australian Heritage Hotel
If it’s a ripping, rough ‘n’ tumble Aussie Xmas you’re after, this joint’s a real corker.
“This place serves up Australia’s most exotic animals for us to consume! Now even our Coat of Arms are served in a pizza. I never had crocodile or Emu before so this was an experience. I loved their chicken wings, peaking duck pizza, steak pizza and their Aussie pot pie ?? Rustic pub showing what aussies are about! Rought around the edges!!!” – Asianfoodninja
Dinner & drinks: Pocket Bar
A cosy bottle of red and some cheeseburger spring rolls. It’s what Christmas is all about!
“Cute little bar just off the back street of oxford main hustle. jazzy vibe with urban cocktails and food bites. great crepes!! My favourite element is the pocket currency they have at the bar… as a travel junkie I appreciated having something fun to look at while waiting to order!” – conceptsbyzoe
A river cruise or your own private tapas party? There are endless choices when it comes to the perfect party in Melbourne. Just remember to BYO tinsel!
Fancy: The Deck
Christmas by the Yarra River is a fine thing indeed, but Christmas at The Deck is as swanky as it gets.
“Mouth watering food and fantastic service makes this, in my opinion, one of the best restaurants and coffee stops in Southbank!” – Neems
Casual: The Empress Hotel
It’s big, lively and free of all pretention. The Empress offers pure festivity with nothing held back.
“Great pub and bar that’s reopened with fun and hip vibe. Good place to go for catching up with friends over a beer. Their live sports broadcast via Foxtel eg for the footy always draws a crowd. The meals are what you’d get at a typical pub but very tasty. Definitely recommend the burger and hand cut chips.” – svchu1
Dinner & drinks: Lulo
World-class seasonal tapas and a wine list to die for. Santa must know we’ve been good this year!
“Fantastic restaurant! I was thoroughly impressed with the atmosphere when I walked in… the staff were very attentive and friendly, as well as knowledgeable. After following the recommendations of the staff as to what to order, I finished my meal satisfied and extremely impressed. Presentation was, as previously described by another reviewer, stunning! The chorizo sausage was a standout.” – bellamyn

“Best food, great service, very professional and welcoming…. bring back the Truffle Gnocchi!!! Wash it down with a bottle of Langmeil Valley Floor……see you guys again soon.” – epiclinic
Casual: Belgian Beer Café
All the best cafes serve beer, so the Belgian Beer Café is a damn good place to be this Christmas. Or any other time of year, if we’re being honest.
“Awesome array of beers, which is what you would expect from a place like this. Best place to get a giant glass of Hoegaarden in Adelaide. Nicely furnished inside and out, food is reasonably priced, but some of the menu choices are pretty heavy if you are looking for something light.” – tottytrue
Dinner & drinks: Ayers House
Ayers was once an epicentre of high society, and it certainly shows. It’s utterly beautiful, with it sweeping halls, antique furnishings, and gorgeous grounds, and it’s a worthy setting for any Christmas meal.

The menu was great, with mostly shared options but some good substantial stuff as well. Great wine list and cocktails that were 11bucks! Service was great, not too intrusive but always there when you needed them.”
