The written word is dead. It’s a phrase that’s been thrown around a lot in the past few years. With the explosion of eBooks and subsequent closure of multiple bookshops (whatever happened to Borders?), it seemed like physical books were becoming a thing of the past.
It’s important that you don’t always believe what you read, though (except for us – we would never lie to you), because new-kid-on-the-block Bookabuy is bringing us a completely new, completely cool way to get your literary fix.
Founded by husband-and-wife bookworms Chris and Mel Tantchev, Bookabuy started when Chris was struggling to find Mel the perfect book for their first wedding anniversary. “Mel’s an avid reader so I wanted to find her something really special for our anniversary. Not having the time to visit bookshop after bookshop, I searched for an online service which could help me choose the right book – but there wasn’t anything available in Australia.”
From that thought sprung Bookabuy – Australia’s very first personalised book subscription service.
You’ve probably heard of subscription services like Bellabox (makeup to keep you lookin’ fancy), Aussie Farmers (for those of you who hate lugging your groceries up a flight of stairs), and Beer Days (when it’s too much effort to head up to the bottle-o) but Bookabuy is different.
What makes it different? Mel will actually go out and personally handpick the book according to your preferences.
We think that sounds like a pretty tough gig, and Mel herself says, “Choosing the right book can be tricky. It’s easy to buy someone a book you’ve read and loved, but finding something ‘just for them’ is much harder.” But, like any book-loving literary aficionado, Mel will trawl through mountains of books to find something just for you.
If you or a loved one can’t enough of the smell of paper, cried for days when Dumbledore died, and prefer fictional characters to real people, this might just be the perfect treat.

Bookabuy has 3, 6, and 12-month subscriptions for around $21-40 a month, AND it comes with free delivery Australia-wide. Alternatively, if you’re feeling adventurous and just want to dip your toes in the pool of the written word, you can also opt for their one-off “mystery book” option.
