Nothing quite compares to the feeling of walking out of a salon with gorgeous, bouncy, silky hair. However, with so many ever-changing hair trends (who can keep track of the difference between ombre, balayage and sombre?), it can be hard to know what looks are in and what looks are out.
We spoke with Mikele Simone, one of the Directors of Academie Salon, to get the inside scoop.
Thanks for taking the time to talk to us Mikele. Can you tell us a bit about yourself and why you started Academie Salon?
Richi Grisillo (Salon and Hair Director) and I (Salon and Makeup Director) opened Academie Salon at the end of 2015. This was the next logical step in our career. With both of us being passionate creatives in the field of hair and make-up with a combined 20 years’ experience, we wanted to create a space that clients can truly relax in and have bespoke service to meet their needs.
Academie Salon is about enhancing one’s look, not transforming it into the unrecognisable.
What do you think will be a big hair trend in 2016?
Expensive-looking healthy hair! Beachy textures will turn more polished and refined. There will also be rich tonality in hair colouring and seasonal brunettes and blondes. Simply put, clients want versatility.
What other hairstyles are coming back into fashion?
The mid-length bob has had its day and now clients are seeking a longer chest-length cut with lots of layering to enhance body, volume and texture. We’re moving away from blunt, heavy haircuts to something reminiscent of hair silhouettes from the ‘70s.
Do you have any tips for making sure my hair stylist nails this look?
It’s always great to have reference photos of what you would like to achieve. I always say three images is good to get a vibe of what the client likes or dislikes, but also set realistic expectations of what is possible.
Sometimes a plan needs to be set in place over three appointments to avoid putting too much chemical stress on the hair to achieve a great colour result.
So tell me, what are the latest must-have hair products?
We are LOVING System Professional Luxe Oil Light. It is a lightweight oil mist that illuminates and adds moisture to hair without weighing it down and comes in a handbag size can so it can be taken on the go.
Also, Wella Professional EIMI DryMe dry shampoo is the best we have used. It has a clear finish and works with tapioca starch to absorb excess oils and gives hair the perfect amount of volume without excess grit.
We all know that we should get our hair cut every few months, but what are a couple of expert tips for maintaining your hair between visits?
Treatments are a must if your hair has had a chemical service to maintain that healthy lustre that has become sought after. They help to nourish and repair hair so it looks its best!
