Sydney Festival

Date: 7-26 January
Location: Various

Sydney, get ready for a crazy month of culture, art and big ideas that promises to enliven and transform the city into the cultural centre of the world, with over 370 performances by over 700 artists in more than 30 venues. From symphony orchestras to German theatre and contemporary Swiss dance, the Sydney Festival’s a downright show-off. The festival is in its 40th year this year and, over that time, has cemented itself as one of the most wonderful in the world. Tickets to most of the performances are available on the day for $25, but don’t forget about the famous FREE concerts at The Domain, with none other than The Flaming Lips headlining this year! FLiCKERFEST

Date: 8-17 January
Location: Bondi Beach

We love ourselves a good movie, and so we cannot wait for FLiCKERFEST, Australia’s only Academy accredited and BAFTA recognised short film festival (so you know it’s legit!). Head on down to the beautiful Bondi Beach and catch a few of the 100 films that will be featured over 10 days this January, specially chosen from over 2400 submissions this year. Movies on the beach? It doesn’t really get any better than that! Tickets will be on sale and the full programme released on December 18, so be sure to get in early. Find out more

 

Slide the City

Date: 15-17 January
Location: Centennial Park

Ah, it’s an age-old Aussie summer tradition. Whip out some tarps, lather them up with detergent, and you’ve got your very own water park right in your own backyard. Now imagine that, but instead of your backyard, it’s in Centennial Park. And instead of the length of your lawn, it’s 300 metres long. Yes, you heard us – THREE HUNDRED METRES LONG. Bring along your floaties, inflatable objects and water pistols for the craziest and wettest event in Sydney this summer. Yaks Sydney Barbecue Festival

Date: 30 January
Location: The Domain

It wouldn’t really be an Aussie summer without a barbecue, would it? This January, The Domain will be host to the biggest barbecue festival in Australia, that’s all about meat, smoke and smoked meats. Our mouths are watering just thinking about it! Not only will you have the chance to savour delights from some of the many barbecue food stalls hosted by Sydney’s most talented pitmasters, but you’ll also have the chance to catch a bunch of cooking demos, live music and DJs. Oh, and don’t forget to check out The Yaks Sydney Barbecue Festival cook-off on the day, where a Grand Champion BBQ-er will be crowned to represent Australia in contests over in the States. Giddy-up!
