Here are some of the hottest events coming to Melbourne this June.

Melbourne International Jazz Festival

Date: 3-12 June
Location: Various

“Writing about music is like dancing about architecture”, or so the oft-misquoted saying goes – and it couldn’t be more true of jazz. Jazz isn’t one thing, a narrow construct into which you can jam all the sounds and explorations, the cacophonies and harmonies, the joys and the sorrows. If you’ve ever thought jazz was simple, this year’s Melbourne International Jazz Festival will prove just how wrong that idea is. Musicians from across the globe are converging on our city to blow our ear-minds, with every kind of jazz style you could think of (and probably plenty you could never have imagined too). There’s stacks of free events to dip your toe into the jazz pool if you prefer playing it safe, or you can dive right into one of the many venues holding special events across the city. Heaving with the best entertainers in the world, the festival is showcasing cabaret’s top performers, including America’s slapstick diva Amy G, and faux-German art-rock comedy gods Die Roten Punkte. Don’t miss the moving tribute to the late musical genius, David Bowie, featuring eight of the country’s finest singers backed by a massive supergroup of musicians performing The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust & the Spiders From Mars in its entirety. And because it’s Melbourne, you won’t be far from great coffee, gourmet edibles, and some funky music to get you in the shopping state of mind. Design divas, fashion fetishists, and sharp-eyed style scouts will discover where the best new products are launched, and you have the opportunity to meet with designers and get your hands on this coveted items before anyone else.
