Are you feeling tired and stressed from sitting at a desk all day? Life can get a bit boring when you’re all grown up… so why not act like a kid for a little bit? Even if it’s only for an afternoon, we think everyone should take the time to play some laser tag, tackle a timber maze, and drink cocktails (you’re still an adult after all). Here are the best places to do it!
The slogan here is “walk in a sceptic, leave with a masterpiece”, and you’ll be genuinely amazed at how accurate that is. Even if the best artwork you ever created was that crayon drawing you did when you were five (mum was so proud), just a single one of these fun and relaxed three-hour classes will see you painting things you never thought possible. Plus, you get to drink as well and that’s always fun!
“I had never painted art before and the first comment I made was that I can’t paint. I’m so glad Cocktails and Canvas helped me to prove myself wrong. Now I do a lot of art at home as well as regular sessions at Cocktails and Canvas. It’s a lot of fun, builds your confidence, provides a chance to catch up with friends and the staff are encouraging and friendly. I can’t get enough of it really.” – Melissa Petrovski
Remember that ‘Pizza Planet’ place where Buzz and Woody meet the little alien guys in the first Toy Story film? Galactic Circus is basically that (well, minus the pizza, actually, but they do have lots of popcorn). It’s a sprawling, gloriously cheesy sci-fi haven of laser tag, indoor bowling and countless arcade machines stretching off into the neon-tinged horizon, and it’s simply awesome. Have fun!
“One of Melbourne’s best gaming arcades I’d say. All the machines are well maintained and the staff are always so active and friendly. They have plenty of games from ticket games, to racing games and even laser shooting. Another thing I like about this arcade is although they have a card system where you can load money on the card, they also accept coins which is great.” – mass.d
Anyone who grew up around Melbourne in the last couple of decades will likely have very fond memories of A Maze ‘n Games, where barbeques, 24-hole mini golf and one of Australia’s biggest timber mazes come together to form the ultimate day. Tackle the fiendish puzzles, battle your way through to the maze’s four towers, and relax in the cafe after a hearty day of pathfinding exertion.

If you like your mini golf with a twist, then Glow Golf is the place for you. It’s 18 indoor holes across a black-lit, glow paint-slathered course, made up to resemble an immersive range of atmospheric environments. There’s also laser tag, as well as the infamous ‘Coffin Ride’. If you’ve ever wondered what it might be like to be buried alive by a pair of unhinged cockneys, now’s your chance!

One of the CBD’s coolest hidden gems, Robot Bar is a cosy little den of sushi, sake and wall-to-wall Japanese pop culture. Soak up the red-hued style and marvel at the retro Godzilla posters as you crack open a cold Orion beer, and make sure to check out a Tuesday anime showing sometime. Even if you have no idea what’s going on, it’s usually worth it just for the crazy facial expressions.
