Tis the season to be jolly… and to go looking for Christmas lights. There’s nothing like driving around once the sun has gone down, appreciating all the incredible ways people have lit up their homes. Here’s where to find the most dazzling displays in Sydney!
Sydney Road, Hornsby Heights
It’s got a name that’s easy to remember, and after just one visit, you’ll find that Sydney Road’s light displays are pretty hard to forget. There are around 50 houses decked out with awesome lights, and the road was closed last year so people could wander around and enjoy it. Nearby Brett Avenue, Margaret Avenue, Plateau Close and Ulolo Avenue also like to take part, so it’s pretty magical! You’ll want to set aside a few hours just to get the full experience.
Minago Place, Castle Hill
When just a single home in this cul-de-sac features six snow machines and thousands of sparkling lights, you know you’re in for a treat. The neighbours’ efforts are just as impressive, and the whole area is more festive than playing Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You on repeat for six hours. And that is pretty dang festive.
Marcel Place, Baulkham Hills
Everyone loves going to see a great Christmas light display – but what if you could help those in need at the same time? Marcel Place’s glittering 2015 extravaganza was a fundraiser for the local children’s hospital, including a sausage sizzle and visits from jolly old Saint Nick himself, and we’re sure this year’s effort is going to be just as impressive. Heaps of houses get in on the act, so embrace the spirit of the season and drive down for a night even the Grinch would enjoy.
Borgnis Street, Davidson
If the Christmas lights are any indication, Borgnis Street is not a place that does things by halves. Every house seems to be trying to outshine the others (literally!), and it’s a glorious thing to behold. There will be a sausage sizzle each night in December, complete with ice cream vans and money collected for the Bear Cottage children’s hospice. Now that’s what we call Christmas.
If you don’t fancy the sausages, head to Stella Blu Ristorante for a fine Italian feast. Sushi Izu is also great for raw fish fans, and New India Times Restaurant brings the spice.
Flanders Street, Matraville
In true seasonal spirit, the residents of Flanders Street come together to host one of the coolest light displays in town. It’s a must-see for anyone near the area, and be sure to keep a special eye out for number 20. This house is surrounded by gorgeous, handcrafted wooden characters, and is so Christmassy it makes you want to sink a pint of eggnog and launch into songs about bells and holly. Go ahead – we won’t judge!
