Newtown Social Club


Once known as The Sandringham (or “the Sando” to locals), this venerable pub is deeply entwined with many of Sydney’s favoured sons and daughters of rock. Heck, The Whitlams even wrote a song about it! Nowadays, the weekly (and free) Craw Daddy Club continues to showcase the very best in local bands. Black Wire Records


Immensely cool record shop by day; even cooler live music venue by night. Yes, it’s Black Wire Records, and It’s long been the chosen haunt of those who veer towards the underground and the cult. Acts such as Alps of New South Wales, Kirin J Callinan, and the gloriously named Slug Guts are all favourites here, and it’s the perfect place to sample something a little different. Find out more

The Gasoline Pony


Rustic, unpretentious and thoroughly relaxed, The Gasoline Pony is a top shout if you’re looking to catch a few lower key, more chilled-out vibes some time. The acts tend to stay on the folksy, bluesy, indie side of things (with occasional bouts of reggae, country and psychobilly thrown in for good measure), plus the lamb ribs are sublime. “The Gas Pony is situated a little funny. It’s inconspicuously places somewhere on Marrickville Road toward Sydenham. The couches outside let you know this place is mad chill.
