The Next Wave Festival in Melbourne is all about flipping conventional thinking, with confusion and disagreement as the theme for this year’s event. With 75% of works led by women and 20% led by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists, Next Wave aims to tackle the difficult issues facing society through art and culture. Whether it’s a cross-cultural dance by deaf and hearing dancers, a 24-hour-straight live performance of a single movie scene or a personal meditation session, this festival is guaranteed to get you thinking. St Kilda Film Festival

Location: Palais Theatre and St Kilda Town Hall
This month, St Kilda becomes the new Hollywood for short films! The St Kilda Film Festival showcases the best of the Aussie film industry with one of the biggest short film festivals of the year. The Top 100 short films will be screened alongside entries to the SoundKILDA music video competition and the Under the Radar contest, which is held for budding filmmakers under the age of 21.
