Sydney Writers Festival

With more than 300 events over the course of a week, the Sydney Writers’ Festival is the biggest and best literary festival in the country. It’s grown a lot since its humble beginnings, and this year over 400 writers are packing into Sydney to share their wisdom and get your mind buzzing with inspiration. Underground Arts Market Party

Date: 29 May
Location: Jam Gallery – 195 Oxford Street, Bondi Junction

It’s underground, it’s all about art, and it’s a high-energy market that’s all about creating a fresh space for Sydney’s best artists, craftspeople, DJs, bands and performers. The Underground Arts Market Party brings together a mish-mash of local creatives from all walks of life to give visitors a snapshot of what’s really hiding under the radar in the Sydney arts scene. So crawl into Jam Gallery and catch performances by acrobats and live painters, while browsing niche records and one-of-a-kind crafts, before grabbing a drink and a bite to eat at the three pop-up bars. Find out more


Vivid Sydney

Date: 27 May – 18 June
Location: Various

It’s the only time of the year where it’s cool to wear sunnies at night. Sydney’s turning on all the lights once again for Vivid – and this year it’s upping its game with awesome events all over the city. You’ll still be able to see the famous moving light murals at Circular Quay and the Sydney Opera House, but new installations will also be featured at Taronga Zoo and the Royal Botanic Garden. And if you’re keen on lighting up the mind as well as the eyes, Vivid Ideas is the place to be. This stimulating program of public talks features personalities from all over the globe. GABS Beer, Cider & Food Festival

Date: 27-28 May
Location: Australian Technology Park – Locomotive Street, Eveleigh

GABS stands for the Great Australasian Beer SpecTAPular, which is what the festival used to be called. And even though the name has changed, the spirit of the event certainly hasn’t. With over 400 craft beers and ciders (including over 120 drinks made specifically for the event) it’s sure to have something for even the fussiest ale aficionado. But we all know that a good beer isn’t complete without a snack and some entertainment to go with it. Don’t worry – GABS has got you covered! Culinary delights from Three Blue Ducks, Mr Bao, Playa Taqueria and more will be served up on the day, while entertainment will include a stack of food and drink classes and demos. Find out more
