Rooftop Bar

Melbourne

We can never resist an establishment with a good old self-explanatory name. Melbourne’s rooftop bar scene is legendary, and this one flies the flag. Rooftop equals bustling, friendly crowds, a brilliant atmosphere and fabulous city views, not to mention the pièce de résistance: an open-air cinema! Sipping on a drink and reliving a cinematic classic or new release under the stars? Sounds like a fab time to us.

“They have now renovated this bar to allow for additional room as they get quite popular now and sometimes on busy nights, there could even be a long queue that wraps around to get up. But it’s worth the wait, especially if it’s a night warm Melbourne night. I still love the crowd here, and the ‘no shots’ rule. And still my favourite bar in Melbourne.” – mass.d

Riverland Bar

Melbourne

Riverland is situated right on the banks of the beautiful Yarra, which makes it one of the best spots in town for a balmy summer bevvie. The tap beer selection is grand indeed, and the food is wonderfully filling (polish off your meal with the Big Ass S’mores for sweet perfection). The building itself is a beautiful construct of rugged grey stone, and the beer garden is super lush. If you’ve never been before, this will soon become a new favourite.

Republica

St Kilda

Republica is an effortlessly cool and breezy bar plonked right on top of St Kilda Beach, with gorgeous views over Port Phillip Bay. It’s attractively modern, with light wood panel and a spacious interior, but the outside seating is definitely where it’s at in the summer. The daily specials are well worth a look, especially Tuesday’s $12 fish and chips. Baby, we’re ready to go!

“This is one of my favourite Sunday afternoon spots. Good atmosphere and live music make it a great place to spend a few hours relaxing. The menu could do with a few more cheap snack options for those who don’t want a main meal (which are on the pricey side). But with plenty of drink options, and the choice of a great beer garden or sea views, you can’t go wrong.” – LVE

Madame Brussels

Melbourne

Flowery, fanciful and cartoonishly posh (but not really), Madame Brussels is what we might imagine Queen Elizabeth’s attic looks like (or one of them, anyway). Expect AstroTurf floors, plush garden furniture and staff dressed ready for a quick game of doubles, and all the Pimm’s, punch and rosé you can handle. The rooftop terraces are lovely this time of year, and even dogs are welcome. Everybody wins!

“The atmosphere here is really sweet, like a French Alice in Wonderland tea party. Everything is colourful and dainty, the grass on the interior makes it feel like a garden party and the blankets over the seats through winter are a cosy touch. Have a cocktail and enjoy the Melbourne rooftops.” – Miss Forster

Ponyfish Island

Melbourne

This clever little bar is tucked away beneath Pedestrian Bridge (don’t worry; it’s troll-free), literally floating on the Yarra. The vista over the water is magnificent, and the toasties do the trick very nicely if you crave a light snack. This is a fantastic setting for a delightful afternoon in the sunshine with your mates, so be sure to pop it on your to-do list for summer 2016.

“Great locay under the bridge, sometimes hard to get into, but worth the wait. Good wine list, views are amazing! Recommend” – Sidsmum

If you give any of these bars a go this summer, why not leave them a review? Thanks!
