Pope Joan

Brunswick

Named for the legendary medieval figure, Pope Joan is a great spot known for fresh produce and a wicked Bloody Mary. All the food is top-notch – but when you’ve got a hankering for some bacon, you can’t pass up the Pope Joan Sandwich. It’s a lovely mix of bacon, fried egg and special, homemade brown sauce, and it’s one of the finest breakfasts in Brunswick. Stumble down after a big night and it’ll cure what ails you.

“Fabulous breakfast/lunch place with an awesome array of choices, including some you may not see elsewhere. Very reasonably-priced and always packed! Wonderful, friendly staff – they always try to accommodate you.” – starwoman8

Journeyman

Windsor

The bright and breezy Journeyman cafe is a real favourite with the locals, and it’s not hard to see why. The service is friendly, the coffee is amazing, and the food is delicious. But best of all, they serve up their signature Breakfast Ramen. This is a 62-degree egg, bacon, mushrooms, coriander and spring onions, all served up in bacon dashi (aka bacon broth/liquid bacon/the very elixir of life itself). You do not want to pass up the chance to give this one a taste.

Third Wave Cafe

Port Melbourne

Two words, friends: Candied. Bacon. This spectacular dish at Third Wave Cafe features streaky, slow-cooked, maple-glazed bacon drizzled in organic brown sugar, and comes complete with avocado, poached eggs and hollandaise. The staff have personally declared this to be the “BEST BREAKFAST ITEM ON THE MENU!” (yes, in all caps), and we’re rather inclined to believe them.

Shawcross Pizza

Fitzroy

Just glancing at a photo of a freshly baked Shawcross pizza is enough to drive most people wild with desire. These guys are the real deal, and it’s no surprise that Shawcross is considered one of Melbourne’s very best pizza joints. Do yourself a favour and order the “Kevin Bacon”, with mozzarella, bacon, brie, tomato and rocket. It’ll give you Tremors. #sorrynotsorry

Grand Trailer Park Taverna

Melbourne

Grand Trailer Park Taverna is a supremely funky burger joint with a real flair for cool décor. The burgers are pretty spectacular too, and it’s always a proper mission trying to decide which one to devour. But whichever you go with, be sure to grab yourself a salted caramel, bourbon and maple bacon spiked shake to wash it down. After all, bacon drinks are the best drinks!
