You might not be aware, but salads are actually pretty scrumptious when they’re made properly. And make no mistake, these ones are made very properly indeed…
Known for its fine coffee and talented kitchen team, Pillar of Salt serves up one hell of a salad for your culinary pleasure. It’s called the Californian Superfood Salad, and it’s made of quinoa, two types of kale, organic rice, goji berries, charred corn, black turtle beans and tomatoes. It’s also drizzled in lime and jalapeño vinaigrette, and can even come with your choice of egg, salmon or chicken. Need we say more?
“Best place ever!!!! It gets very crowded, especially on the weekends but the wait is worth it! The staff are very attentive and friendly. The food is of great quality and honestly the coffee is the best I’ve had in Melbourne! You need to try the place out!” – TashLoos
From the woven basket lampshades to the wall of old-timey shutters, Charlie Dumpling has the whole “rustic charm” thing nailed. The lovely staff are also salad legends, and the Kuromitsu Cured Salmon option is the stuff Japanese dreams are made of, with soba noodles, radish, wasabi peas, ginger and miso dressing. A fiery treat to snack on while you admire the large lobster mural painted on the wall. We call him Pinchy!

A colonial door, polished timber floors, and enough hanging plants to oxygenate a warehouse – it’s Fourth Chapter! This place is a big deal with health food fans, serving up everything from smashed avocado to specialty burgers. Today, however, we’re focusing on the Acai Bowl. That’s Coyo, granola, peanut butter, various berries, coconut water, and a dash of vanilla whey protein. Beautiful.

We’re seeing increasingly that fast food doesn’t have to be unhealthy, and few places embody this idea more than Crisp. The quick-serve salads here are awesome, and we particularly love the Pulled Pork Tortilla choice with marinated pork, cheese, tomato, corn, capsicum, lettuce, and a lime & jalapeño dressing. If that doesn’t sound like your kind of salad (somehow), don’t worry. You can just design your own!

You have to love anywhere that just says “HAPPY” on the wall. The little coffee foam smilies are a nice touch, too! Anyway, upbeat cuteness aside, Serotonin is a cafe that uses the latest in health food science to make your tummy tingle. Try the “Nutrition Bomb”, with poached egg, greens, hummus, roast veg, nuts, seeds and sauerkraut. You can also add mushrooms, avocado and feta – and we’d highly recommend you do.
“It’s a happy place to be! Love that there is a light, healthy option for breakfast that isn’t too hippy or alternative. The space is light and bright, made to make you feel beyond comfortable as you sit on a lounge bed table or keep it fun on the indoor and outdoor swings. I have a few friends with dietary requirements and every single person has left feeling full and with a big ol’ smile on their faces.” – kateypower
