Winter’s here, and you know what that means – it’s time to put down the fruity cocktails and indulge in a warming glass of mulled wine or cider. Melbourne’s got plenty to go around, so let’s take a look at some of the best.
Naked For Satan is one of Melbourne’s best loved bars, and it’s not hard to see why. From the incredible views over the city, to the tapas from around the world, this beloved Fitzroy institution continues to tick all the boxes. But if you were worried about visiting this rooftop venue in the chill of winter, don’t. They have heating to keep you toasty, as well as seasonal mulled wine and some corking cider. Try the wonderful Sidra Del Verano Apple, Blackcurrant & Cranberry – it’s a winner!
“A really fantastic bar. Even when it’s thrumming with people you can find yourself some space. An excellent range of vodka infusions, fantastic atmosphere, and brilliant views. One of my favourite bars in Melbourne.” – PeeCeeLark
Cheese and wine are two of the most important food groups, and a balanced diet should feature plenty of both. Luckily, that’s exactly what you’ll get at Milk The Cow. They have something to please everyone, with the right pairing for every taste. They even do cider, and you should definitely try the Cider & Wine Flight with season “gluhwein” (which is the German take on mulled wine).
“It doesn’t get much better than Milk The Cow when you need a cheese fix, southside. Huge selection of local and imported cheeses, as well as paired wine, beer, spirits or cider tasting ‘flights’. Great place to meet friends in winter (for mulled wine and fondue) or in the afternoon for a glass of vino and a bit of banter.” – kateypower
You know what’s better than mulled wine? Mulled wine in a teacup! And that’s exactly how it’s served at The Moat, a swanky restaurant set in the basement of a beautiful 19th-century building. It’s a super-cosy spot for a drink or a bite, with bookshelf-stuffed corners, lush red carpet, and a charming old grandfather clock keeping a kindly eye on everything.
“I come here relatively frequently for lunch, coffee or a Friday drink. The menu is well thought out, the ingredients good and the staff on the ball. The owners have got the vibe right. Don’t miss the happy hour!” – spencer chipperfield
Sure you’ve had mulled wine, but have you ever had it with cognac? That’s how they roll at The Rooks Return, and this lovely concoction is guaranteed to stick some fire in your belly and warm you up from the inside out. The place itself is immensely cool and very welcoming, so grab your mates and head down for a laid-back evening.
“It is one of those trendy hipster bars with this nice outdoor area and a couple of hidden spaces to hide away with your friends. Oh, they also have board games that you can borrow and play while you are here. I have to say that this is one pretty cool bar.” – David Sarkies
If it’s cider you’re pining for, there are few better places to get it than Napoleone Brewery & Ciderhouse. Set amidst the sprawling Coldstream grounds, this homely brewhouse has all sorts of tasty blends to keep you occupied. The house-made, veil-aged cider fino is a particular favourite with loads of dedicated fans, and we’d highly suggest starting there!
“Came here as part of a Yarra Valley wine tour, and almost let the bus leave without me! Beautiful setting up in Coldstream, and the buildings match perfectly, with exposed aged wood and a pleasing tap setup. The girl who was pouring really knew her stuff, and talked a bit about what she would be brewing as part of her small batch (all employees have to!).” – Littleberk
