Best Places to Work Out Melbourne

workout_4

Whilst Melbourne may be well known across the country as a sports mad city (AFL anyone?), it’s not a place famed for an outdoor lifestyle or enviable year round climate. Yes, Melbourne on average is cloudier and cooler than its Aussie urban counterparts (Canberra and Hobart aside), but that certainly doesn’t stop the locals embracing an active lifestyle with the same gusto as sunkissed Sydneysiders and Brisbanites. And when the weather does eventually warm up down south, Melburnians are as keen as anyone to enjoy those lazy summer days hanging out at the beach or local swimming spot in tip top shape. Here’s 5 fitness studios and gyms that have recently caught True Local’s eye and are amongst the best places to workout in this very elegant town.

Aleenta Barre

St. James Square, Shop 4 555 Bourke Street Melbourne

Originally from Adelaide, Aleenta Barre has successfully expanded to a few select locations across the country, including their light-filled studio in Melbourne CBD’s St James Square complex, which naturally comes with floor to ceiling mirrors and plenty of Scandi inspired wood, perfect for your fitness pics on Instagram. More importantly, what goes on inside those studios are 1 hour barre classes led by fully qualified instructors who combine the techniques of ballet, yoga and pilates that make barre such an attractive workout for those looking to get into shape without lifting heavy weights.

“The studio itself is simple and bright with only one window out the front. The shared open change room is on the smaller side and it has a sliding door and only 1 toilet so get there early if you need to change (they have deodorant if you forget and also some lotions from endota next door to sample). What I really liked is the small but quaint reception and the long studio with little felt cubes on shelves to store your belongings”.

Their state-ofthe-art studio includes indoor cycling, yoga, traditional weights training as well as men and womens skincare and grooming services. Naturally, they also offer group classes with memberships around the $200/month mark.

“One of the very best studios in Melbourne. Why? It makes fitness fun like it should be and the music makes me feel like I’m clubbing (bonus) really friendly front desk and instructors. Love the spin and hopoponno meditation class…give it a go!”

Brighton Baths Health Club

251B The Esplanade, Brighton

An iconic location as far as Melbourne beaches go (surpassed only by the busier St Kilda Beach), the Brighton Baths front onto one of the city’s swankiest stretches of sand, with commanding views across the bay towards the CBD. Once inside, Brighton Baths Health Club offers all the mod cons you’d expect from a fully equipped health and wellness facility in this exclusive postcode, including a state of the art gym, large swimming pool, a steam room, personal trainers on hand and group fitness classes (including BeachFit, Tai Chi, Yoga). For the extra hardy, there’s also the Brighton Icebergers – a group of fitness fanatics who go swimming daily in the cold waters the club overlooks, including in the depths of a Melbourne winter!

“Definitely the most unique Health Club I have ever worked at. I enjoy the freedom to exercise so close to nature while still having the comforts of a modern gym and changing rooms. The social aspect of the club is also pretty special with so many interesting characters who are always up for a friendly chat. It’s a great place to come and get away from the busyness of life”.
