Best pet-friendly place of 2017:

Boo Espresso

49 Stuart St

Say hello to your new doggo home, with the gorgeous Boo Espresso, a dog-friendly cafe serving up tasty puppycinos, plus a whole range of good stuff for their humans. And it’s right opposite a big ol’ park so after their treat, your pooch can go make friends with some of the other cafe patrons.

This hole-in-the-wall coffee spot is housed in an old warehouse, with adorable wooden furniture perched under a big, shady tree. And we’re going to put it out there; the Mushroom Truffle Shuffle, with truffle pecorino, and marinated, grilled mushies on GF bread will blow your socks off.

Best bacon venue of 2017:

Johnny’s Burger Joint

6/395 Warton Rd

This delicious venue is hands down one of the tastiest burger joints we’ve been to, and boy do they know their bacon. These guys dish up hearty, American-style burgers – nothing fancy, as they say – with creamy milkshakes and mouthwatering sides. Did someone say cheese and bacon fries? Yes please!

At Johnny’s, you’ll find crispy bacon on almost every burger, smothered in cheese and maybe a little hot sauce if you can handle it. It truly doesn’t get much better than that.

Best winter dessert of 2017:

Sugar & Nice

1/882 Beaufort St

Reminiscent of Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory, Sugar & Nice is full of pastel coloured desserts that will bring a childlike smile to your face. In winter, this place steals hearts (and bellies) with their incredible Toasted S’Moreo, golden s’mores sprinkled with Oreos, but come summer, you’re going to want to tuck into their traditional custard treats and festive Rudolph cupcakes in a salted caramel flavour.

And if you’re ever in the market for an absolutely stunning cake – for any occasion – Sugar & Nice should be top of your list. Their colourful, custom cakes look more like artworks, almost too good to eat! Almost…

Best frosé hotspot of 2017:

Bobèche

131 St Georges Terrace

Elegance meets carnival at Bobèche, with a unique mix of 1920s glamour and whimsical mischief. And thankfully, if it’s the delicious pink drink that you’re after, they have that in spades. A few ice-cubes short of a frosè, Bobèche is more in the game of rosè, with its crisp Cake Wines Rosè from Adelaide Hills a particular favourite.

The venue offers spirits and cocktails galore, with a quirky Alice in Wonderland theme to both its food and drinks menu. If you’re feeling extra thirsty, we recommend ordering the teapot (yes, teapot) of Spring Sangria, which includes Tanqueray gin, rosè, cinnamon, vanilla and seasonal fruit.

Best laneway bar of 2017:

Ezra Pound

189 William St Arc

Ezra Pound rode the first wave of small bars in Perth back in 2009, and takes inspiration from the American Prohibition era, where alcohol was consumed on the sly in basement dens and speakeasies.

Naturally, their venue takes cues from this style, with dark wooden tables, plush velvet chairs, and dim lamps swinging from exposed beams. Here, it’s all about unpretentious ambience and some really cracking cocktails from yesteryear.
