Get Tropical at Sydney’s Best Rum Bars
From students to pirates to pirate students, everyone likes a bit of rum in their bellies. But where can you find the best rum cocktails in Sydney? Don’t worry friends! We’ve put together a list of our favourite rum havens in the city.

Button Bar
Thanks to its gorgeous 18th century aesthetic, Blackbeard himself would feel right at home here at Button Bar. It’s cosy, golden lit, and dotted with oaken barrels, comfy booths, flickering candles, and even the odd flintlock pistol. As for the rum? Go for a Lamington Flip, with Bacardi 8, Coco Lopez, raspberry jam, Aztec chocolate bitters an egg and a coconut sugar rim.
“Another great little bar in Surry Hills. This one is close to Central Station so you can stumble home by train. There are several cosy booths which tend to get snapped up way too quickly.” – jojostuff

The Lobo Plantation
Another bar enriched with the style and vigour of the past, The Lobo Plantation is a sprawling palace of classical New Orleans opulence. The winding staircase, French sofas, plush armchairs and baroque carpets all contribute to a wonderful sense of indulgence, and the rum flows very freely. Our favourite mix is the fruity, ginger-spiced Rum Cannonball, but there’s plenty more to choose from!
“This place impressed right from the door. The door host was fun and welcoming, the fitout was on another level and an energetic bar team turned out the most delicious cocktails. Simply a must.” – jay-illy

Grandma’s Bar
You simply can’t talk rum in Sydney without a nod to Grandma’s Bar. Everyone’s favourite “retro-sexual” haven of snug, comfy drinking packs a bounty of boutique spirits, with rum being a particular speciality. If you want something hearty, the Peanut Butter Colada is an awesome blend of golden rum, coconut, homemade pineapple puree and fresh peanut butter. Go ahead, treat yourself!
“I love Grandma’s! Perfect cocktails made exactly how YOU want them. Table service that’s amazing. Nice wine. Love their jaffles. There’s just so much to love! It’s quite a small venue so it can get pretty busy. Oh and the nice live music always is a great touch.” – Janaliamk

The Cuban Place
The best in Latin libations, music and nourishment combine at one of Sydney’s funnest hangouts, with something to catch your eye at every turn (from the wall of Cuban photos to the fancy display of rare spirits). While you’re there, you might as well grab a drink! The Spiced Rum Cooler is a splendidly refreshing cocktail, comprised of Captain Morgan’s, Campari, lychee, grapefruit and lime.

Bondi Rumba
We wouldn’t normally suggest you let a Dirty Sailor anywhere near your mouth, but we’ll definitely make an exception for the one served at Bondi Rumba. It’s a devilish play on the standard mojito, with Sailor Jerry’s Spice and ginger beer, and it’s almost too drinkable for its own good. It’s pretty much perfect for sipping as you take in the bohemian charm and laid-back atmosphere of this South American beach bar.
